JESSICA

“Get out of the water, Jessica.” Grayson growled. “Or I'm going in.”

It was bad enough that he never toldabout the Triad or that he never mentioned I'll be weak when he finally

marked me. Now, Grayson reduced himself into a cheating bastard.

All he’s done is lie to me.

“I'm going to make an example out of you so you can never disobeyagain,” he snarled. “Out now.”

While | know Grayson is true to his words, I'm not stepping out. | turned my back to face the water until | found

myself swimming at the end of the lake.

When | rise from the water, he’s staring down atwith so much rage in his gaze.

“What gare you trying to play, Jess?”

“Why do you have to ask?”

“You're getting stubborn.”

“No you're getting boring.” | turn my back on him, but it lasts all of two seconds. Rough hands clamp down on

my shoulder and yankaround, draggingback into his shadow. His grip is bruised, his eyes worse. “Get

your dirty hands off me, you filthy rascal!”

The tremor betrays me. Heat stings my eyes, tears threatening to spill, but | refuse to look away. For a fraction of

a second, the fury in Grayson’s face fractures.

He looked at the others. “Leave us. Now.”

“Why did you make them leave? Afraid I'll spill how you've been fucking your adviser behind

my back?”

My question made his eyes break from mine. Turns out Grayson knew ten times more curses than | ever gave

him credit for

“What the fuck did you just say?”

One minute, he’s across from me. The next, I'm slammed back against the water, his hand squeezing my throat.

Rage sparks hotter than fear. | twist, driving my knee up hard, catching him in the ribs.

He snarls, breaking his hold, but only to shovedown harder, water splashing around us in violent waves.

“Little bitch,” he growls, hair dripping, eyes feral. “You think you can win against me?”

| spit water back at him, lips curling.

| grab his wrist with both hands, fingers digging for purchase. He squeezes harder but | was already hopping

behind him, legs winding around his thighs.

Grayson thrashes, wild and furious, but | hold fast. His growl shakes the air; my pulse pounds.

“Why?”

He swings, knockingsideways. “Stop fighting me!”

Before | can react, his hands wrap around my wrists, slamming them above my head.

“I am not cheating with her! Why the fuck did you think that?”

“Liar!” | snapped, chest heaving, eyes blazing. “I saw you with her!”

“You saw what exactly, Jessica?”

“Let go of me!”

| watched him retreat, just enough to release me. Both of us were panting, chests heaving.

“Have you forgotten you are my mate?” Grayson asked, helpingget out of the water. “I literally buried my

whole pack for you, Jess. Do you have any idea what that means?”

“I did this for you, and you're still fighting me? Still doubting me?”

| stomped, sending a splash of cold water toward him. “I'm not doubting you! I'm fighting you because you're

controlling me, you lied toand now | saw you sharing a damn breakfast with that woman!”

“Jessica.”

| could have stopped there. | could have waited, listened, and asked for an explanation. But | didn’t.

| slapped him across the face before spinning on my heel and running back inside the house.

The moment | reached the doorway, | froze.

Visitors.

Grayson’s dark eyes locked on mine, and for the first tsince the fight, neither of us moved.

“Bad timing?”

Triad.

| could not make out the words; my blood roared in my ears. Grayson held my hand and pushedinto our

bedroom, water dripping from our wet bodies.

“Clean yourself. I'll handle it.”

| don’t know how | managed to clean myself in a minute, but the moment I slipped on a fresh shirt, | found

myself disobeying Grayson once again.

He growled the instant he sawstep outside our room. In one swift motion, he shoved the man in his way

aside, pressingbehind his back.

“This is your problem, Westwood. So damn overprotective.”

“Get out.”

All this time, Grayson knew about the Triad lurking around me. He manages to keepon the blind spot for

what?

“No. | want to talk to him.”

“Jessica!”

His angry stare did not stop me. | could hear him growling behind as | sat on the couch and watch the guest do

the same.

The tattoo crawling on his neck toldeverything.

Grayson joined me, and | realized will | be pushing his limits if | don’t want him here?

“Alone, please.”

“Don’t do this to me.” Grayson almost pleaded. Do what exactly? | thought, narrowing my eyes.

He'd letact, letpush, but the truth? He controlled everything I didn’t know.

“Get out.”

Grayson froze, eyes blazing with anger. Then, with fists clenched and jaw tight, he stormed out of the house.

Once we were alone, | turned to face the guest, who had the widest, most irritating grin plastered across his

face.

“Damn. What a tamed alpha. Hmmm?” he teased, eyes glinting.

“What do you want?”

“You.”

A lull of silence fell between us. My eyes flicked back toward him, only to see him chuckling to himself.

“The Triad wants to make you an offer.”

“After kidnappingand orchestrating a coup?” There was no answer. “Whatever your offer is, | don’t want it.

He glanced up, fascination in his gaze. “He can’t protect you. The Triad can. Leave this pack Jessica. Leave

Grayson Westwood. Cwith me.”

“Protectfrom what?” | laughed. “You're delusional if you think I'd ever leave Grayson.”

. “Delusional? Perhaps. But I've seen how this pack-or rather, how he-fails. | can give you what he cannot.”

| narrowed my eyes, every instinct screaming atto strike, to fight. “I don’t need protection from anyone but

myself... and Grayson. Stay in your lane.”

| would do everything in my power to protect Grayson Westwood. He’s my mate and my alpha.

Mine.

The guest loomed over me, tsking to himself. “Hes’ cheating, isn't he?”

“You've heard.”

“He lied about the markings,” he said, voice low, almost a whisper, as if savoring my reaction. “Seems your

precious Grayson isn’t as truthful as you think. Makes you wonder what else he’s hiding, doesn’t it?”

“He may lie, but he’s still mine. You... are nothing.”

This moment felt like a repeat of my fight with Grayson. Except now I'm defending him.

“Did he ever tell you the price of the protection this pack has offered so you could be here?”

| knew there was a price and | hadn't asked him about it.

“Such a delicate omega.” | forced myself to not be affected by the way this guest is treating me. His hands touch

my stomach and | growl. ” It's here, Jess. A hybrid pup that will rise in power... stronger than anything you've

ever seen. You're a breeding fool, Jessica. And Grayson is using you.”
