Chapter 1015
Several days had passed since she last saw him, and the man who used to exude elegance and command
respect, a man whose very presence screamed
confidence and luxury, was nowhere to be found.
Sitting across from her was Avery, his face haggard and drawn, his once meticulously groomed hair now slightly
disheveled. The sharp, hawk-like eyes that used to be his defining feature were now bloodshot and weary.
Once, he was Mr. Avery, a scion of the prestigious Chambers family.
Now, he was a fallen man, a mere shadow of his former self, a prisoner in every sense of the word.
Yet, when Avery heard that Evadne was coming to see him, he made an excuse to go to the restroom, quickly
tidied his unruly hair with swater, and washed his face in haste.
The pride of the young Chambers heir had been shattered long ago, during his first year in Helgen.
Since then, the world had known no Mr. Avery, only a man named Avery who climbed ruthlessly over others,
driven by vengeance and consumed by a darkness that had eroded his conscience.

He cleaned up, only because he was about to see Evadne.
Yes, he still loved her.
But he had finally cto terms with the fact that he never deserved her, not from the start.
Pushing for something that was never meant to be had only brought misery to both of them.
Separated by the thick glass, Avery and Evadne locked eyes. He looked at her in silence, unable to find the
words.
It was Evadne who broke the stillness when she noticed the bruise on his lip and the cut on his forehead, asking
with a detached calmness, "Did they rough you up?"
Avery closed his aching eyes for a moment, his pale lips curving into a faint, almost sad smile. "A lot of strangers
in here hate me. I've been ruthless, done horrible things. | saw this coming."
"You're not easy to beat. | don't see how you could get hit so easily."
"I deserve it, don't I?"
Avery's smile was a ghost of its former self, but his words to her were sincere, "Evadne, you might not believe
this, but the days I've spent in this place have been the most peaceful I've had in over a decade. Before, |
seemed to have it all, yet | spent every night plagued by nightmares. Every morning, | woke up thinking about
the battles | had to fight, the vengeance | had to exact for myself and my mother. Now, it's finally over."
With that, he placed his gold-rimmed glasses, which had been his constant companion for half his life, on the
table. "My eyesight isn't even that bad. Wearing these always felt like putting on a mask. Now, | don't need them
anymore."
Evadne lowered her gaze slightly. "Knowing you, | thought you'd rather take your own life than be captured."
"But isn't it your wish to seebrought to justice, to face trial?"
Avery's eyes softened, a gentle curve forming in them. "I want to fulfill your wish." His voice was tender, like a
lover's whisper, but no amount of affection could erase the deep hurt and resentment in Evadne's heart.
"Evadne, you've lost weight."
Avery's eyes roamed over her face, memorizing every feature with a greed that longed to keep this final image
of her locked away in his memory, to carry with him beyond the grave.
"I cto ask you, what did you give Thaddeus?"
Evadne took a deep breath, trying to keep her voice steady despite the piercing pain. "I know asking you might
be in vain because of your hatred for Thaddeus. | don't expect you to have a change of heart. If you choose not
to tell me, consider this my farewell."
"I don't know."
Avery met her gaze with an honesty that was rare for him. "Evadne, | truly don't know. The drug was given to me
by Sir. | have no idea what's in it or what effects it has."
Sir.
Always Sir.
Evadne leaned forward, her voice urgent and strained. "The Sir you mention, is he
the one who backed you and used you for human drug experiments in ElImsworth?"
Avery's pupils dilated slightly, and he nodded slowly.
"Who is Sir? Have you seen him?"
"Evadne, hateif you must, but about Sir, this is all | can tell you."
Avery wasn't holding on to any dreams of freedom.
He just knew too well what would await Evadne and the entire Ashbourne family if she learned Sir's true identity.
