bloodless way to take him out of the picture.
"If I swallow these, will you let Evadne go?" Thaddeus asked, his voice breaking like dry autumn leaves
underfoot, each word like a pebble in his throat.
Avery's smile was as casual as a Sunday morning, "Sure."
"Do you honestly expectto believe you? If you wantdead, facelike a man or send your goons. Hell,
just shootalready."
Thaddeus's fist met the glass in a furious punch. "Don't think I'll fall for your cowardly tricks!"
"Two choices." Avery's smile widened, like a Cheshire cat's. "It's either you or her, Thaddeus. The choice is
yours."

Thaddeus's heart felt like it was being shredded by a thousand tiny blades. He roared, "Avery! Leave Evadne out
of this!"
"That plea of yours shows you've chosen already." Avery picked up one black pill, leaving the other two behind.
"Just take one. No need to make this harder than it has to be."
"All of them!" Thaddeus shot back, seeing through Avery's ploy. "I'll do what you want. Just let Evadne go!"
From the start, he knew there was no real choice.
He feared Avery might force svile concoction down Evadne's throat or retaliate against her if he resisted too
much.
His brothers were already on their way.
By playing along, Thaddeus could buy them more tto rescue Evadne.
Even if it was poison, he'd endure it. He had to.
Thaddeus, you've got to hold on!
Soon enough, a maid appeared, seemingly out of thin air, with a small pillbox in hand.
"Go on, prove it to me." Avery's eyes
glinted with
behind his gold-rimmed glasses, like watching its prey.
Thaddeus lowered his eyes, now brimmed with unshed tears, to the three pills in his palm.
Tticked by, each second stretching into eternity.
Just as Avery was about to unleash a mocking remark, his eyes widened in shock
Thaddeus suddenly threw his head back and, without a moment of hesitation, swallowed all three pills in one go!
At that very moment, as if

Evadné, unconscious, fluttered her long lashes, her delicate fingers twitching ever so slightly.
Avery's pupils dilated in an overwhelming rush.
Nobody knew what kind of reaction Sir's pills would produce, nor what
consequences they might bring.
Yet here was Thaddeus, swallowing them all without fear, without hesitation. Was he truly unafraid?
In that instant, Thaddeus stood as a testament to human resilience-unyielding, formidable, fearless.
He made every other man seem small, not with arrogance, but with sheer presence.
Avery threw his head back and laughed, a laugh that turned into tears of bitterness.
Until today, he never understood why his love seemed to fall short compared to Thaddeus's.
Now he finally saw the truth-
The gap between them was as vast as an ocean.
Even if he spent his entire life trying to bridge it, even if everything reset to the beginning-
He could never measure up.
Moments later, the pills began to take effect within Thaddeus.
His dark eyes contracted, then expanded, like a storm rolling in.
