Chapter 16

“Hi there. Are you Ms. Spence?”

A young man walked over to Grace with his phone in hand.

He was a head taller than her, with a healthy tan and a bright smile that showed his perfect teeth.

“Yes. Are you Andy?” Grace nodded.

“Yeah!” Andy Gilmore's smile becbrighter. “The landlord and the research institute askedto pick you

up.”

Seeing that she only had a backpack, he didn’t offer to carry

Instead, he walked beside her, sensibly maintaining a polite distance.

“Clastein is an island nation with a population of only about 80,000. Since it’s your first there, Mary, the

landlord, was worried you might get lost, so she sent me. I'm also a tenant, and | live downstairs from you.”

As he led her out of the small airport, he introduced the situation here to her.

Grace immigrated on a passport, and during the process, she changed her name. No one would know her

previous name.

Now, her non all her documents was Camille Spence.

She’d be the only one who knew she used to be Grace Parrish.

Her prison guard friend, Violet Waters, found the place for her. It was a loft with a view of the sea and a volcano.

She said to Andy, “OK. I'm grateful to you and Mary.”

She smiled, “To express my gratitude, how about | cook tonight?”

“Really? Awesome!” Andy was over the moon. “Since you're from Becrenga, I'm sure anything you cook is

delicious. It's been ages since Mary and | enjoyed Becrenga cuisine. I'm not exaggerating at all; Becrenga cuisine

is the best in the world. Well... but | can’t handle too much spice.”

He scratched his head, feeling a bit embarrassed.

“It’s fine. I'll skip the spice then.”

Grace was very considerate when facing him, a simple, shy young man.

“That's great! If you're willing to cook two or three times a week, I'm sure Mary will be happy to reduce your rent

by a quarter, or even half.”

Andy beamed; even the freckles on his face seemed to dance in joy.

Looking at him, Grace felt she was in a better mood.

It was just the beginning, yet she had already felt that her new life was full of hope.

However, things in Osmal City were quite different.

Every the closed his eyes, he'd always see the emaciated Grace.

In his dreams, she looked at him coldly; there were still horrifying bruises on her neck.

Her eyes were devoid of any affection or warmth.

He couldn’t accept it.

It couldn't be. She'd never look at him with such cold eyes. It was almost as if he were a stranger to her.

“I know the truth now. | know everything that happened. I ... was wrong...”

He had never made any compromise, and he stuttered when apologizing.

Yet Grace interrupted him with an indifferent expression.

“So? You think just by saying that, you can make those seven years of torment go away? | was smeared and

tortured for seven entire years, Antonio.”

She sneered, “Should | thank you for lettingoff?”

She said these words with deep hatred, almost cursing him. He woke up with a start.

The night wasn’t even over yet.

It was still wee hours.

Just then, his phone rang abruptly.

It was a call from Simon Parker, his special assistant.

Frowning, he answered the phone.

Simon sounded so calm as if he were reporting on work.

“Mr. Kaufman, Ms. Kyla has jumped off a building.”
