Watching as Daniel was dragged away, Karen was still fuming, though she tried to reassure herself. "I'm not
upset, I'm not upset at all! Getting mad just gives you wrinkles."
The commotion downstairs caught Adah's attention, and she cdown from upstairs. "Mom, what happened?"
Karen's barely-suppressed anger flared back up at once. "It's that boy from the Robinson family! | can't believe
the nerve-he actually dared to talk badly about my granddaughter-in-law!"
"What happened?" Adah asked, curiosity piqued.
Karen recounted the whole incident, and by the tshe finished, Adah was fuming too. "What's gotten into
Daniel? He used to be such a polite kid!"
"He's lost his mind, that's what! | swear, the Robinsons are going to fall apart with him in charge. And to think
our Sherman has always treated him so well!" Karen grumbled as she started taking off her costume. "That's it!
I'm going to see my granddaughter-in-law. | can't let that brat go around spreading nonsense about
her!"
"I'll cwith you," Adah said, getting up.
Karen waved her off. "No need, I'll go by myself. Just have someone keep an eye on that little troublemaker!"
"Alright!" Adah nodded.
Karen went to her room to change before heading out-she'd gotten into the habit of putting on fresh clothes

As they drove past a grocery market, Karen suddenly said, "Claud, pull over! | want to buy sfruit. My
granddaughter-in-law loves the mangosteen from this place."
Claud offered, "Ma'am, why don't you wait in the car? I'll go get them for you."
"No, you stay right here!" Karen insisted. If she was buying fruit for her granddaughter-in-law, she was going to
pick them out herself.
Karen got out and headed into the store. She didn't just buy mangosteen-she picked up slychees and a
whole selection of Anthea's favorite fruits.
As Karen was leaving the store, arms full of fruit, someone suddenly slammed into her.

Fruit tumbled everywhere, scattering across the ground, and Karen herself was knocked down.
At that moment, a shrill voice cut through the air. "Watch where you're going, you old hag! Are you blind?"

"Who are you calling names? You bump into me, then act all high and mighty? Trashy woman!" Karen snapped
back.
Rebecca's arrogance cfrom knowing Karen's family had fallen from grace. The Christensens were no longer
powerful-who was going to stand up for Karen now?
"Say that to my face again, you old hag!" Rebecca shot back, her face twisted with rage.
Suddenly, Karen plopped down on the ground, grabbed Rebecca's leg to keep her from leaving, and fished out
her phone with the other hand "Help! Someone's attacking me! Officer, please, someone is bullying an old lady!"
she wailed as she dialed 911.
Rebecca hadn't expected this at all. Her face went pale as she stammered, "What
are you talking about, you crazy old woman? Who hit you?"
As luck would have it, a patrol car happened to be nearby. The police arrived almost instantly.
The moment she saw them, Karen played up the , tears streaming down her face. Officers thank goodness
you're here! If you'd cany later, I'd be dead by now! Please, you have to help me!"
Rebecca was so furious she looked like she might explode. She tried to explain, "She's faking! This old woman is
putting on an act, trying to frmel Officers, don't listen to her!"
Shameless old hag! How dare she pull something like this?
"Don't worry, ma'am," one of the officers said calmly. "We'll make sure justice is served. We won't let an innocent
person be wronged, and we won't let the guilty get away."
