Chapter 38: Lu Zhishen’s Good Aim

That shot had been clearly aimed at a place where Ji Ye and Lu Zhishen were standing.
Veiled inside blue light, the arrow over a meter long traveled across the chasm in an instant.
Without special eye enhancements, Lu Zhishen was unable to see what was happening on the other side. Nevertheless, his body quickly moved to the side upon hearing Ji Ye’s voice.
Lu Zhishen raised his new clawed gloves out of instinct; enchanted with yellowed light, his hands slammed against the arrow to deflect it.
The arrow was forced to change course; it sunk inside a large tree close by, only leaving the fletchling outside. Even after going through such a great distance and having been dampened by Lu Zhishen’s fist, it still retained a deadly momentum that was enough to shatter a human skull.
At least Ji Ye didn’t believe his crossbow could unleash such a powerful attack.
That bigger “Eagle Man” was clearly an Extraordinary creature. Probably another alien “Hero.”
“Let’s back away!” Ji Ye and Lu Zhishen quickly moved into the woods to avoid further attacks.
Follow on NovᴇlEnglish.nᴇtThe Eagle Man didn’t seem to be bothered by having missed the attack. Its “third eye” gleamed slightly, before it turned away to watch its teammates killing the winged bear.
“We can’t underestimate them...” Ji Ye muttered behind a tree, while checking the strange arrow he had just plucked out. It did resemble an arrow, but it definitely wasn’t crafted by human hands. It was mostly made from the bone of an unknown beast, while its shaft had all sorts of strange runes drawn on it.
As to whether those runes were magical or not, he didn’t know. If he sent his Flame Burst bolt over, those Eagle Men would probably also see the word “ZIPPO” as some kind of incantation.
Unfortunately, Ji Ye had no way of sending back his regards right then since he didn’t bring his crossbow. He could use the revolver, but it would be pointless, since the bullet would lose its power as it went over the abyss.
Besides, he had never trained to use firearms. Aiming at a moving target across several hundred meters with a handgun would only waste his bullets. This was why he didn’t take out the gun when they fought against the Mandrill.
However, he didn’t want to just suck it up either, when someone had clearly meant to humiliate them. That would be a big shame.
“Listen, Chief Lu, I’ve got a plan...”
Ji Ye explained his new idea right after he remembered how the bulky warrior could easily throw two stone dumbbells into the air like tossing toys.
“Understood, master.”
Lu Zhishen picked up a random stone from the ground that looked as big as a human head, and carefully ground it into a smooth ball easier to handle.
A few minutes later, the winged bear was drawing its last breaths while bleeding, but the “Eagle Men” didn’t intend to wait for it to die out; all of them raised their weapons to kill it faster. action
The battle could have ended way earlier if the Eagle Man hero had provided more help, which it didn’t do. The creature was probably trying to train its underlings just like Lu Zhishen was planning to do with the settlers. Although the alien hero was using more brutal means, as one could tell from how most of its comrades had been injured by the bear. One of them seemed to be close to dying.
Looking at how the rest of them fearlessly threw themselves at the bear, the training had paid off.
Vroom!
A boulder suddenly flew in their direction at a high speed, as if hurled by a catapult. The deadly projectile created a sharp, high-pitch noise as it moved across the air and went for the dying bear.
The “Eagle Man hero” narrowed its three eyes upon noticing the sudden event.
Bam!
The stone attack went slightly off its mark and grazed past the bear’s head, hitting a running Eagle Man instead.
Boom!
Just as anyone would expect, a general-rank creature would be hopeless when hit squarely in the head by such a big stone. It instantly dropped dead on the floor before it knew what happened.
The dead Eagle Man did not generate any glowing item spheres. Instead, something black emerged from it.
“That’s a Soul of Civilization?” Ji Ye muttered while examining the sphere from far away. “I see. You get more of those by killing other tribes.”
[Your team member has killed an Eagle Man (Ordinary Rank-7). For providing assistance, you gained EXP: 15. Honor: 1.]
“Heh. Not only did I run into aliens, I even nailed one of them.” Ji Ye chuckled. “Maybe I’m the first human player who has ever done that. Too bad I didn’t finish the kill myself.”
Follow on Novᴇl-Onlinᴇ.cᴏmThe name “Eagle Man” looked rather lame. Though he wasn’t going to complain. The Land of Inheritance tended to come up with straightforward names for all kinds of things anyway.
He wondered how those Eagle Men would call him. Weird, dual-eyed bipedal freaks? That sounded accurate enough.
“HA! I did it, master.” Lu Zhishen came back with a proud look.
In the story of Water Margin, Lu Zhishen was never someone who would frown upon bloodshed. He didn’t look bothered at all when murdering an alien enemy.
The Eagle Man hero had been keeping its attention on Ji Ye’s position. Lu Zhishen had managed to move openly and pull off that successful shot, all thanks to the extra piece of clothing on his body—Ji Ye’s Mantis Stealth Cloak.
On the other side of the abyss, the remaining Eagle Men didn’t show any particular reaction at the death of their friend. Instead, many of them ran to the edge and angrily yelled at the place where Ji Ye was hiding, as if they wanted to curse him into submission.
Too bad their beaks and claws couldn’t help them fly. The shortest distance in view across the abyss was still at least 150 meters, which meant jumping over was impossible.
The Eagle Man hero might use its weapon to attack again. But Ji Ye didn’t plan to give it a second chance. He told Lu Zhishen to leave the area right away.
“What did you say? We can bring Ducky back?”
While on their way back to the cave, Ji Ye was surprised by a piece of information from Lu Zhishen.
“Yes, master. When I killed one of those intruders, I received new enlightenment from heaven again. It told me that as long as we make it to the end of the war and survive, we’ll be able to bring back our lost comrades through a ritual performed by using the Soul of Civilization.”
In Water Margin, Lu Zhishen had always beat himself over and over for sending his companions to their deaths. He was currently over excited after receiving the news.
“Man, that sure sounds great!” Ji Ye nodded in approval.
If this was true, then the settlers didn’t need to fear death during battles, which meant that they could be more daring to protect their settlement better. And they had to keep the settlement safe at all costs, because the ones deceased could not be revived without it.
