Audrey's POV
Dr. Evans adjusted the surgical mask over my face, her fingers gentle but hurried.
“Are you alright?” she whispered.
I nodded, though it was obviously a lie.
“The medication will mask your sympto
enough strength left?”
“I can manage,” | said, my voice barely audible.

Dr. Evans motioned to one of her students, who quickly approached and placed a medical tray in my hands.
| clutched the tray, grateful for the prop. The gauze and bandages on top gavea reason to keep my eyes
lowered. With one last squeeze of William's hand, | followed Dr. Evans toward the door.
The hallway was tensed. Blake's voice cut through the space, sharp with anger.
“What do you mean there's nothing you can do?” he demanded. glimpsed him gripping a doctor’s coat. “His

“The emotional shock was too much for his heart,” the doctor was explaining. “We're doing everything possible,

be honest the outlook isn’t promising.”
“That's not good enough,” Blake snapped.
Elizabeth's voice broke through. “Blake, control yourself.”
| risked a quick glance and saw her setting aside what looked like legal documents, her expression completely
unmoved by
her father’s critical condition.
“This isn’t the doctor's fault,” she said coolly. “Father was already fragile. News about Audrey pushed him over
the edge.”
“William left sixty percent of his assets to Audrey,” Elizabeth continued, “while we have to split the remaining
forty. That shows you his priorities.”
“Given his attachment to her,” Elizabeth added, “is it surprising this news hit him so hard?”
Rebecca jumped in. “Right. That girl somehow convinced your grandfather she was more important than his own
family.”

“But fate has a way of balancing things,” Rebecca continued. Someone from nothing shouldn't get such
blessings, God wouldn't allow her to take what isn’t hers.”
Her voice turned smug. “Who would have thought she'd die before William? Now that she’s gone
“Stop it!” Blake's voice thundered, startling everyone.
“Who told you Audrey is dead?” he demanded. “She was just in an accident. That doesn’t mean she’s dead.
Have you seen her body? How dare you talk about her like that!”
I nearly laughed at the irony. For three years, I'd endured Rebecca's insults while Blake stood by silently. Now
that | was ‘dead,” he finally defended me.
Rebecca stared at her son, momentarily speechless. “Blake! | am your mother!”
“Audrey is dead! The car was crushed and sank in the river. What more proof do you need? Her body was
probably swept away by the current or eaten by sharks!”
She stepped closer to Blake. “And if she were still alive, wouldnt she be here? Your grandfather is dying, and she
supposedly cared for him. Where is she?”
| watched as the color drained-from Blake's face, his anger suddenly extinguished.
Dr. Evans tugged my sleeve, remindingto keep moving. We edged along the wall, nearly reaching the
elevator when a familiar voice stopped us.
“Dr. Evans? What a surprise!”
Laurel stood directly in our path, false sweetness plastered across her face.
Before Dr. Evans could answer, Laurel called out, “Blake darling! Look who's here - Dr. Evans!”
My stomach dropped as Blake's attention shifted toward us.
