Chapter 162

Daniel's POV.

The moment | stepped into my car and slammed the door shut, felt like a pressure cooker on the verge of

exploding. Christiana’s words played over and over in my head, each one cutting deeper than the last. My

knuckles whitened as | gripped the steering wheel, the heat of my anger rising like a tide.

“How could she do this to me?” | spat, slamming my fists against the wheel. The horn blared for a second, but |

didn’t care. My breaths cout in harsh, ragged bursts as ny vision blurred with rage.

| slammed my fist down again. “Damn you, Alex!” | roared, my voice echoing in the enclosed car. “It’s always

you, isn’t it? She can’t see past you!”

| gripped the wheel tightly, my fingers aching from the force. “After everything I've done, after how much I've

tried to show her I'm better for her, she still chooses him. Him!” My voice cracked with frustration, and |

slammed my head back against the seat.

A sharp, insistent ringing broke through the haze. | glanced at my phone on the passenger seat: Grandma. Her

name-blinked

on the screen.

“Not now,” | muttered, swiping to silence the call. “I don’t have tfor this.” The phone buzzed again, then

stopped after a few rings. | stared at it, debating for a second, before shaking my head. No. | wasn’t in the mood.

| turned my gaze to the windshield, my jaw clenched so tight it ached. “Why, Christiana?” | whispered bitterly.

“Why can’t you see it? He's not good for you. | am. | would've given you everything. Everything!”

My voice rose again, and | punched the dashboard this time, the pain shooting up my arm barely registering. The

rage was too consuming, too relentless.

“Does he even love you like | do? Does he even know how much I'd sacrifice for you?” | snarled, my voice

dripping with venom. “No, he doesn’t! He can’t! He doesn’t deserve you, Christiana. He doesn’t!”

| was losing my mind, | knew it. The way | paced in my thoughts, the obsessive energy coursing through me-it

wasn't healthy, wasn’t normal. But | couldn't stop it.

“You'll see,” | said through gritted teeth, my reflection in the rearview mirror wild and unrecognizable. “One day,

you'll realize he’s not the man you think he is. And when that day comes, I'll be here, Christiana. I'll be here

waiting.”

The phone buzzed again, and | snatched it up, tempted to throw it across the car. But | didn’t. | simply silenced it

once more and threw it back onto the seat.

With a deep breath, | tried to steady myself, but it was no use. My heart hammered in my chest, my head

spinning with every bitter thought, every unanswered question.

“She’ll caround,” | muttered to myself, gripping the steering wheel again, my voice almost pleading.

Suddenly, an idea crept into my mind as | sat there in my car, staring blankly at the dashboard. My rage ebbed

momentarily, replaced by something colder, more calculated. A twisted smile curled my lips as the thought took

shape. If Christiana wouldn't listen to me, perhaps there was another way to get her attention-a way that she

couldn't ignore.

Without giving myself tto reconsider, | started the car and pulled out of the parking lot, my grip steady on

the wheel. The destination was clear in my mind: Ethan and Emma’s school.

The drive felt surreal, the cityscape blurring pastas my plan solidified. When | arrived at the school, | parked

and took a deep breath, smoothing my hair and straightening my jacket. | had to look calm, collected.

Trustworthy.

As | entered the administrative office, the receptionist glanced up, offering a polite smile. “Good afternoon, sir.

help you?”

I leaned on the counter, keeping my voice calm and steady. “Good afternoon. My nis Daniel Brooks.

Something urgent has cup, and | need to pick up Ethan and Emma to take them to their parents.”

The woman furrowed her brow slightly but nodded. “Letcheck with their class teachers. One moment,

please.”

| waited patiently, the air thick with anticipation. My heart pounded, but | kept my face neutral. This had to work.

Moments. later, the receptionist returned, accompanied by a teacher.

“Mr. Brooks, | just need to confirm...did their parents notify you to pick them up?” the teacher asked, her

expression polite but cautious.

“Yes,” | said smoothly, giving her a warm, convincing smile. “Their mother had an unexpected emergency. She

askedto cand get them. You can call her if you'd like to confirm.”

The teacher hesitated, but something about my demeanor must have reassured her. “That won't be necessary if

you're on the approved list,” she said.

A few minutes later, the sound of hurried footsteps echoed down the hallway, and then | saw them...Ethan and

Emma, their bright faces lighting up when they spotted me.

“Uncle Daniel!” Ethan cried, his small voice filled with excitement as he ran toward me. Emma followed, her

pigtails bouncing as she clutched her brother's hand.

| crouched down, opening my arms wide to catch them as they threw themselves at me. “Hey, my favorite

twins!” | said, laughing warmly. “How are you two?”

“We're good!” Emma chirped, her blue eyes sparkling. “Are we going to see Mommy?”

“That's right,” | said, standing up and holding their hands. “Your mom and dad had to handle something

important, so they askedto pick you up and bring you to them.”

The twins nodded eagerly, their trust inabsolute. The teacher smiled at the sight, seemingly reassured by

the children’s excitement.

“Well, they seem happy to go with you,” she said with a small chuckle. “Letgrab their bags.”

As we waited, Ethan looked up at me, his face full of curiosity. “Where are we going, Uncle Daniel? Is it a

surprise?”

| ruffled his hair, forcing myself to smile warmly. “It’s a surprise, buddy. You'll see soon enough.”

Emma tugged on my hand. “Can we get ice cream on the way?”

“Maybe,” I said, my voice light, though my mind was racing. “But let's get to the car first, okay?”

The teacher returned with their
