ATHENA
One week later...
"Do you know what this is?"
"| plead the fifth." | respond head on.
He ignores me.
"It's a document signed by Alexander King, stating he doesn't want it to be used on him no matter what!. This is
the very drug that you used in surgery!"
"His family consented. | consented." | respond in an irritated tone.
Anger bubbles inside me. My son is scared and has caught on that something is wrong. They keep callingto
the prosecutor's office, detective center etc, the hospital refuses to backup. Alex's father made sure I'm not
detained and promised to handle this. The only reason I'm not currently wearing an orange suit is because of his
power and influence.
"Who are you to consent?" The detective asks, but | refuse to answer. "You're not legally allowed to do that!" he
snaps. "You're not his wife, next of kin, nor power of attorney. You had no right!"
"Maybe | am his wife. How do you know I'm not?" | raise a brow.
Well, I'm his ex-wife. But he doesn't need to know that.
"Trust me, we would know." He responds coldly.
My eyes fall to his chest so | can read the nof his badge.
"Detective Burner. Right?" | give him the most chilling smile | can summon and lean forward, "I'm pretty sure you
heardwhen | said his family consented, right?"
He sighs, leaning back with irritation marrying his features, " His family may have agreed. That may be the case,
but Alex is a public figure, and the Quinns Medical hospital is answerable for each action. They have no say in
this, and the law will take action!"
"| pretty sure we've established the fact that | don't give a shit." My patience starts running thin, and courage
starts babbling insidelike I've been possessed.
"Even if he specifically said not to be saved?"
Follow on NovᴇlEnglish.nᴇt"Even if the world screamed atto let him go. | wouldn't have."
He studies me, his frustration rising with every answer I give him.
Makes two of us.
"You're not God, Dr. Dawson."
"Seeing you're still alive and kicking confirms that statement. If | were a powerful being, you wouldn't exist."
| know men like him. Men who have no backbone or desire for justice. They are puppets used by the rich to get
what they want and make everyone dance to their tune. I'm long past that. They're just about to find that out.
He slams his hand down. "You violated medical law. You disregarded an explicit DNR equivalent, used an
unapproved drug, shut out hospital staff, and threatened your team in the OR!"
“The door had a fault. | just went to check it. Can you prove | locked it? Did anyone from the inside admit to
that?"
His eyes burn in anger, "Because you fucking threatened them!"
"Woah! Calm down detective. Wouldn't want you having a heart attack. | wouldn't save your ass, so be careful
won't you?"
He breathes out slowly and slides the file back toward himself. "You know what happens next, right?" His eyes
meet mine,
"You look tough now but you'll eventually Slip. | can't wait to break that attitude of yours. You're only not in jail
because of Eli King's intervention. But make no mistake, if this goes to trial, your license is gone, your reputation
destroyed, and you will face jail time."
"Is that supposed to be a threat?" | ask as | rise from the chair slowly, deliberately, letting the silence stretch.
"Because if it is, you're going to have to do a hell of a lot better."
| walk toward the edge of the table, my hands flat on the cold surface, and lean just slightly closer.
"My son cries at night because I'm not there. And the man | love, the father of my child is fighting for his life
while you sit here swinging your tiny little badge like it makes you powerful. | know you know who | am to the
Kings by now.
So don't play stupid with me. Your worst mistake was thinking you could takedown and cornerinto giving
you the drug In exchange for freedom know your little games, and | must say you're shitty at them. Maybe
whoever sent you needs to get a new puppet." s
His nostrils flare.
| smile, cold and unapologetic. "You think you scare me? | know men like you. Weak men. Spineless, gutless,
hand fed puppies trained by och men to bark on command. s
His jaw clenches.
"You think you're a predator, but all | see is a dog in a suit. Wearing someone else's leash."
He stands up violently, his chair scraping against the tile. "Watch your mouth"" “Or what?” | taunt, not stepping
back. "You'll put your hands on me? Go ahead. Proveright."
His face turns a dangerous shade of red. In one fast motion, he steps around the table, slams his hand on the
nearby camera, and switches it off with a loud "click".
"Finally," | mutter. "No more pretending."
His hand flies out and slamsagainst the wall. The cold tile digs into my spine as he pinsthere, his eyes
wild with rage.
"I'll break that mouth of yours," he snarls. "And no one will say a damn word-"
But before he can get the complete sentence out of his mouth,
He's yanked back, lifted and thrown across the room like he weighs nothing.
He crashes into the opposite wall with a sickening thud, groaning as he slumps to the floor.
| gasp, stunned.
"You really thought no one was watching her?" he growls, his voice like gravel dragged across steel. “Touch her
again and 11, make sure your corpse is so disfigured your mother won't recognize you." s
Detective Burner coughs as he tries to stand, only to freeze when his boot slams down on his chest.
"I've taken men apart for less than laying a hand on my girl." He hisses, lowering
his face so close their foreheads almost touch
"You're lucky | don't consider you worth the blood on my suit."
He rises, brushing nonexistent dust from his sleeve, and walks towithout
another glance at the man still wheezing beneath him.
"You okay?" he asks, his voice gentler now.
My mouth opens.
Then closes.
It opens again.
No words.
Tears fill my eyes.
I'm shivering.
I'm speechless.
"Con baby, talk to me. Are you hurt?" His deep voice asks.
| haven't heard it in so long my heart aches as | blink trying to think about how he
is here or if he is real.
"How are you here?" | whisper. A lump forming in my throat.
"I'm wherever you are, baby. | said I'd keep you safe didn't I?"
