Chapter 440: Lucky III
"I want to end the gang, want to stop its operation..."
A hesitant pause. "Kael did something that he needs to atone for. He attacked my family, interfered in my
business, breaching the contract between us both without providing any evidence of my doing the same..." Ewan
spoke when John concurred that he got to why he had cto visit.
And when John said nothing, other than looking at him with a steady gaze, Ewan continued. "And to be honest,
even if | don’t want—although | will—Athena is coming for them. They attacked her grandparents."
"Grandparents? To the best of my knowledge, she has no one other than that cunny Zack?"
Ewan shook his head. "Zack is old story, and not even her real father. She is a Thorne. Her mother is the late
Emily Thorne..."
John’s mouth dropped open, even as his eyes widened fractions.
"You can't... be... serious..." He stuttered, shaking his head slowly, disbelief shadowing his features. "What a
small... world."
Ewan, of course, understood the latter's shock. Hadn't he himself been in such a state when Fiona had vomited
truths that had been too unnerving?
And where the hell was that evil witch? If she loved her life, she better not involve herself any more in the mess
she had created, or else... He left it hanging, reverting to the conversation with John.
"And in case you haven't heard, she is also the infamous doctor known for her role in the Grey Virus disease..."
More shock plastered on John’s face. "I heard of the Athena Caddels of course, but I didn’t think..."
"I understand."
And Ewan put John up to date with the recent happenings in his city, keeping away, of course, the private talks
he had with the family in the Thornes’ living room.
When he was done, John let out a heavy, tired sigh, shoulders sagging as if the weight of the years pressed
harder on him. "I see." He muttered, and Ewan wondered on what level was the ’'l see.” A good or a bad one?
"You can go ahead then. I've lost touch with them after all, neither do | support the activities..." A loaded pause.
"I've thought of calling Kael, you know, telling him to put down the operation, give it all up, but | know that would
be a fool's dream. He will never give it up. Neither will he be happy if he finds that | am still alive, that he has

John’s eyes were filled with so much sorrow that Ewan knew what the one request of the former would be.
"I know he can be stupid, cruel too—after all | did train him—but promise that you won't kill him. You can do
away with the operations and all, but don’t touch his life."
Ewan exhaled softly, leaning forward, elbows braced on his knees. "You know | can’t do that. Things can get
messy."
John relaxed into the sofa as one who had given up, his earlier erect posture-when Ewan started with the story
telling-melting into resignation. He rubbed his hands together, the tremor in them betraying what he tried to
mask.
"I know. But promise that you will try at least... that you will give him a chance to turn from his ways..."
Ewan sighed. "I promise. But if he shows no sign, | will take him out, John."
John nodded with hesitation. "A deal it is." A sigh escaped him. "He is stupid to touch the Thornes though... did
he forget my warnings..."
Ewan shrugged. "I told him too. But you know he can be strong-headed, especially with the tenacity of whoever
his backer is."
"That too... still thinking of who that can be..."
Ewan scanned the male before him. Years ago, the latter had been an icon of ssort, rolling with the big men
of society, governors, while running his business underground. So it was possible he might make some
deductions.
"Nothing comes up now, but you will sendyour private number before you leave my island. If | think of
something, | will let you know. About tonight, don’t bother leaving, we have a room for visitors you could use. It's
already midnight. The hotel would be closed by now."
Ewan nodded, pleased really that his visit had turned out better than he expected, more grateful for Ella for
being the commissioner for this change and peace in his old boss.
"Thank you, John."
Calling this nfelt weird in his mouth, weirder with every calling, even though he knew that was the way with
new things.
Just when he was about to inquire about the room that was his, Ewan noticed the brooding nature of John, the
quaking hands, and he felt sorry for the latter, because like him, John knew that the chances of Kael turning a
new leaf was next to none.
And so when John opened his mouth to speak again, Ewan prepared his answer, ready to stand firm on his
decision, but what he heard coming out from the former's lips wasn’t what he had in mind.
"I have a confession to make, Ewan."
A confession? Ewan was
immediately wary. Did the man still

"One that you can’t say to your priest?" he teased, needing to make light the atmosphere. "I don’t look like one."
John chuckled, albeit sadly. "You don’t need to be one to hear this."
A pause.

Ewan raised a brow, completely intrigued. "Consequences? What did you do, John?"
