Chapter 436: Dejection Il
Silence on the other end of the phone—one which persisted for more than a few seconds—informed Athena that
her confession had rattled Aiden, had made him speechless.
She swallowed hard, her fingers tightening around the phone. But she couldn’t have lied about it, couldn't have
assured the latter that she had things in control, that she would take care of things with more time, like Ewan
would—well, Ewan did deliver when he spoke.
She could have if she understood the solution, but she didn’t. So even if she was given a week, she didn’t think
she could deliver.
Her chest rose and fell in a slow, weary sigh. She had spent more than seven hours trying to understand, but to
no avail. The gates of wisdom and knowledge of science had been shut against her.
"Athena, are you sure? Maybe you need more time... and you can take as much as you can... you are not the
bringer of the virus. Don’t let the expectations pressure you..."
Athena sighed again, pressing her palm against her forehead. Her friend was yet to understand. "Aiden..."
"I know. | know. | heard what you said, Athena." His voice was soft, almost pleading. "But you don’t give up, not
easily. Keep trying. You can take a break. Go sleep, or immerse yourself in sunlight, in watching nature... maybe
an inspiration might come..."
Athena closed her eyes, her head tipping back slightly. As much as what Aiden listed worked at times, she didn’t
think it could be applied here. But she said, "Okay." Because that’s what he wanted to hear.
"Good." A pause lingered, filled with the faint sound of his exhale. "You can do this, Athena, just hang in there,
and poke around that big brain of yours."
Athena chuckled—softly, sadly, her lips quirking with a humor she didn’t feel. "You get it, big man. Now, tell me,
why did you call?"
"Just to inform you that we have the situation under control, and you need not bother your pretty head about
that."
"And what situation would that be?" she asked, raising a brow though he couldn't see it.
"The prisoners that had escaped the Black Cells. Fortunately for us, they were tagged, hence easy to track. Ewan
had sent us their coordinates when he had been sure they had stopped moving. We met sof his men on
those locations even..."
A pause. "You know, | wonder if he ever lacks men. There seems to be a stream of them, whenever he beckons
on them. The prisoners were hiding in different locations, and in those, we saw his men. Turns out he’s been
working with Shawn... the latter had given him access to the tags. Do you think he slept at all last night?"
Athena shook her head, strands of hair falling forward, before remembering that she was on call and Aiden
couldn't see the shaking of her head. "No."

"I don’t know," Athena answered, rubbing her temple.
"But he should have... it's already noon. And | hope that goes well too... Kael needs to pay for his crimes."
So did Athena wish too. Maybe if they could get to him, he could tell them all about the sponsor of this madness,
since Morgan had been useless in that regard.
"What about Fiona, and her father? Heronica too... have they been located?"
A pause on the other end informed Athena that whatever answer she would be receiving would not be the one
that she wanted.
"No. They hadn't been tagged... the officials must have gotten lax, seeing as they were new intakes. We
currently don’t know their whereabouts, but we will keep looking."
Athena pressed her fingers at the space between her eyes, squeezing shut her tired eyes. Another loose end,
with no possible way to tie it.
They would just have to be vigilant, put up posters and all... but if she would take a guise, the twould be in
disguise, and would know better than to access their bank accounts.
Still, they would need cash. Who would they go to?
"Athena... are you still there?"
"Yeah," she muttered, pushing herself up from the sofa, the ache in her body heavy. She needed her drugs. The
headache was starting up again. "Keepupdated, Aiden... as | take your advice."
"Of course. Stay fine."
And then the call ended.
Athena fumbled with her bag, her hands slightly shaky. She took out two pills from her container, downed them
with a gulp of water from a water can, and returned the container to her handbag.
Taking deep breaths, she sat on the stool again, elbows on the table, and watched the solution in a beaker. What
to do? What next?
Her phone rang out again, dragging her attention sharply. She snatched it up. Susan.
"Susan... did something happen?" she started as she answered the call, eyes and brain suddenly alert with the
dopamines and endorphins induced by the drugs for the first five minutes.
"I'm not sure," Susan answered, heightening the tension.
Athena leaned forward, grip tightening on the phone. "Not sure? Explain."
"I went to the hospital to—"
"You did what?!" Athena shouted before she could help it, surging to her feet. "What are you doing there? What if
you get infected?"
Susan's sigh could be heard from the other end of the phone, but Athena wouldn't be deterred.
"How can you be so careless? You didn’t even letknow."
Another sigh from the latter. "Someone needed to check on the situation of things."
Athena scoffed, pacing the room. "And what then did you see, checker of things?"

"No," Athena breathed out, swiping her hand down her hair, from the crown to the base.
"So, what are we going to do... to at least push back the virus, if not to cure it totally... something to contain it..."

She shook her head, shaking away the doubts. "I can work with that. Thanks, Susan."
"Don’t mention, please... we have to work in any way we can. | also spoke with the doctors to stop bombarding
your phones with calls... that you are working."
Athena opened her mouth to thank her young friend, relief flickering in her chest, when the latter dropped
another bomb.
"And | don’t know if you have seen the news lately... | doubt it, considering you have been busy... but one of the
