"I have to say, you're far better looking than | remember." Empress Julia says, walking forward.

| left the room in search of Cynthia, pushing open door after door. In one room, a couple was tangled up having
sex; in the next, a woman was carefully applying paint to her face. The third room was empty except for a soldier
standing guard. My irritation grew with each door | opened, and then, | pushed open the final door on the wing.
I knew she was there even before | saw her.
Empress Cynthia was clearly expecting me. There was no smirk on her face, but her eyes blazed with fury as she
rose to her feet.
