Chapter Thirty Four

| didn’t think she was leadingthe right way. But | didn’t let her know that. | tried keeping track of every route

we followed, but there were just too many turns.

“Riley”. | turned to see Axel. | couldn’t deny the relief | felt the moment | saw him. “I told you to stay there;

where did you go...” His words trailed off as he only seemed to notice Beatrix at my side, and he gavea

questioning look.

“Beta. Not to worry, she is safe with me; we were only having a little chat, and | was going to escort her back to

her room; she’s not very familiar with this place yet.”

“Thank you, but | will be taking over now,” Axel said, taking my arms and leadingaway.

Beatrix had actually been leadingthe right way.

When we were a good distance away, Axel stopped.

“What?”

“I told you to wait there. Why didn’t you” Axel questioned

“I got overwhelmed; I'm sorry.”

“No, don’t be. | had been worried.”

“Why? Wait, did you think | was going to run away?”

“I thought of that, but of course, you wouldn't be able to pass the soldiers, but that still wouldn't be a fun

experience.”

“Then... why?”

“Thane would probably killif I lost you.”

“Now | get, but | doubt he would kill you, so if that is your worry, please be rest assured, you are very safe.”

He laughed. “You don’t know Thane very much, do you?” he questioned.

What | did know was that Thane would never go as far as killing Axel or anyone for me; | wasn’t his true mate; |

was only a substitute, and that agreement would only stand for six months-this | didn’t say out loud.

“No., | don’t.”

We finally returned to my room.

“So you and Beatrix-are you guys like friends?”

“What do you think?”

“I don’t know; girls are very weird, but this is simply a huge surprise.”

“After | spoke to my mother...”

“How did it go?” Axel asked, cuttingoff.

“Bad- I'm surprised you hadn't been listening in.”

“Why will I? She wantedgone, and | know you both needed to talk.”.

“My mother... she seems to be a new person. | won't be visiting her anytsoon; | don’t care anymore, and I'll

let her live her life.”

“We both know that is a complete lie; you will never stop caring about her; she is your mother after all,” Axel

said, and | hated the fact that he was right, but | had to make a decision.

“She was just so ungrateful; all my life | had wanted to see her free, and | knew that this was also what she

wanted. But then she finally is free, but she doesn’t like it. More to that, she keeps makingfeel like a fool.

Even if she knew | had no option, it was either | stay with Ryder or | chere and Ryder would be my end; he

yet... | feel like she does not even want to seeliving. At the Windborne pack, | wasn’t living; | had only been

surviving. | hated that life and | hated that pack, yet she thought | would be better off there. You know, | always

thought she loved me, but now... now | am not very sure.” | finished my little rant. “I'm sorry, | just had to let it

out.”

“It’s alright. She believes she knows what's best for you.”

“But what do you think, Axel?”

He paused for a while. “I'll not decide if you will be better off here; your mother has her reasons, but | believe

everyone should be given a chance to make a choice, even if it might not end up being the best choice,” he

says, and his words leftdeep in thought.

There was silence for a while, but I finally broke the silence.

“We aren't friends. | and Beatrix, | mean’

“That would be more reasonable. Where did you meet her?”

“She said she had been waiting for a chance to speak toalone.”

“And you spoke to her alone?” Axel asked.

“I knew it was dangerous, but | couldn’t back down because...”

“That would hurt your pride.”

“Something like that,” | admitted. “I had gotten lost when | stupidly decided not to wait for you; | just couldn't

stay there, and | met Beatrix.

“What did she talk to you about?”

“I will tell you only if you promiseone thing
