| watched the soldiers as they paid tribute to one of their own, Axel. The pack members weren't the only ones
present. Many from other packs cto honor Axel’s burial, and despite how | had promised myself | wouldn't
cry, | couldn’t hold it in.

up at Thane, the sadness clear in his eyes, but never once did he shed a single tear. “How do you do it?” |

Nina, Axel’s cousin's sister, who was rarely ever around was also present; her eyes swollen and red. | walked to
her and stood by her side.
“He was a brave man.” | said to her, and she nodded, looking up to me.
“He was, and he really loved you, you know; you were all he ever talked about.”

“That's Adrain, Axel’s brother, and beside him is his... mother.” Nina informed me. | watched Axel’s mother break
down in tears, but | could feel nothing but dislike for her. Axel had practically begged for her attention; he was
willing to do anything to have her back, but she always pushed him away, and now he was gone. It was too late.

| returned back to my room, where Thane sat, sipping a glass of whisky.

“Maybe,” he agreed. “It feels so surreal. Axel had always been there for me, and now...” Thane left his sentence
hanging; he took another gulp of the whiskey.
“I have an idea.” | said, taking out the white silk material, | had actually gotten this laterns for this very purpose.
“What is that?” Thane asked.
“They are called sky lanterns” | gave him one. “I want us to do this-not just for Axel but for every single person
we lost.”
| wondered if Thane saw this as stupid, but he only shrugged. | picked up the lighter, and I led him to the
balcony. | lit up my lamp.
“This is for Nelly, for Jake, for the little girl who was killed, for the

| passed the lighter to Thane, and he lit up his lamp too.
