A wave of disappointment swept over me, but | couldn't believe Beatrix that so easily; | had to be sure... | wanted it to be false so badly.

“Done,” I said, and she looked atsurprised

“I should leave now,” she says, but | gave her no response. She heads for the door, pausing once as if to say something, but thinking against it, she walks

“I'm back,” Axel says with a smile that disappeared the moment his gaze found mine. “Are you okay?”
“Yes,” | said too quickly.
“No. You are not okay, what happened?” he inquired. | couldn't tell him; he was the beta, Thane’s closest friend,
yet this was the only way forto know the truth; this was the only

| could confirm what Beatrix had said, and if she was wrong, | would let it go.
“There's this secret... but promisethat if | tell you this... Thane wouldn't hear of it.”
“What type of secret is that?” he questions, because his relationship with Thane restricts him from keeping
important knowledge from his Alpha.

But Axel joinedon the cushion.
“If it doesn’t put your life in danger, then | promise.”
“What would happen towhen Thane gets the title as the Alpha King?” | asked, and he was silent for a few
seconds, but that was all | needed. “So that’s why he wanted a mate? to claim the title, and then what?... | am

“But that would be the end of whatever this is.”
“Who told you all these?”
“That
was not my question!”

“So you could do what? Murder the person? You don’t believe | could figure this out myself?”
“I'm not murdering anybody, Riley.”
“Then answer my question.”
“I don’t know.”
