Chapter 844

Marguerite despised Maurice, and she knew all too well that she had no real power to stand against him.

With a fierce glare in his direction, she wheeled her suitcase back to her room and locked the door behind her.

She pulled out her phone, contemplating calling Robert, hoping he could somehow get her out of this mess.

But that thought was quickly dismissed.

Sure, Robert had plenty of bodyguards at his disposal, and while they might not be able to confront Maurice

head-on, they could probably help her escape.

But Miley was pregnant, and Marguerite feared that Maurice, out of spite, might harm Miley.

Once someone has a weakness, they becparticularly vulnerable, and for Robert, that weakness was Miley

and her unborn child.

So, Marguerite had no choice but to silently endure.

She stayed in her room, not emerging until it was tfor work the next day, by which tMaurice had already

left the apartment.

His company had just relocated to Cresthaven, and there was a lot for him to handle.

Yet Marguerite still felt no sense of freedom because every tshe left, there was Charlotte, the so-called

"personal assistant" Maurice had assigned to her.

In reality, Charlotte was nothing more than a blatant spy.

At Poppy Petal Fragrances, there wasn't even a desk for Charlotte; whenever Marguerite was busy, Charlotte just

lounged on the sofa outside the glass-walled office.

One day, Chuck stopped by, and Marguerite noticed Charlotte standing up, as if trying to eavesdrop.

Thankfully, the glass walls were soundproof, but Chuck still lowered his voice:

"Marguerite, maybe you should tell President Penelope about this? Maurice's behavior is practically house

arrest.”

Marguerite rubbed her temples, feeling utterly drained from the constant mental chess gwith Maurice.

"Let's not. The new branch just opened on the north side of town, and she's swamped. Besides, she's no match

for Maurice, and picking a fight with him wouldn't benefit her."

"Are you safe? Has he done anything to you?"

Instinctively, Marguerite glanced towards Charlotte, finding her at the door of the glass office.

Not having overheard anything, Charlotte was likely eager to report back to Maurice and was always trying to

glean what she and Chuck discussed.

Marguerite found herself amused, and with a deliberate raise of her voice, she said:

"Don't worry, I'm perfectly safe. I've got a knife under my pillow! If anyone tries anything, who knows, maybe I'll

just stab them one day!"

Charlotte visibly flinched, casting a startled glance at Marguerite, and their eyes met for a brief, intense moment

before she hurried away in fright.

Every night, Marguerite could sense someone pacing outside her door.

Once, while she was chatting with Miley on her phone, Charlotte must have noticed the light from her room and

actually knocked, urging her to go to sleep.

So those words, Marguerite had meant for Charlotte to hear.

Marguerite had no idea how long this miserable existence would last, but every day with Maurice around felt

suffocating.

The more she resisted Maurice, the more he pushed to be close to her.

He even began picking her up from work daily, sometimes dragging her along to the grocery store.

They'd been mistaken for a couple several times by the store clerks. He'd buy cartloads of deli items and

vegetables but never actually cook them.

It dawned on Marguerite that perhaps from the very first day she met Silas, Maurice had known all about it.

Because every single item Maurice picked up at the supermarket was exactly what she and Silas had chosen

when they unexpectedly ran into each other there.

Yet, she was helpless against Maurice's childish antics.

Since that night Maurice and Silas talked, Silas had vanished without a trace.

She didn't know what Maurice had said to him, not even a text had cfrom Silas.

But maybe it was for the best; any man who got close to her usually met a grim fate.

It was better for Silas to disappear entirely, sparing him from being dragged into Maurice's chaos.

But surprises often trump plans.

Marguerite did her best to avoid running into Silas, but his appearances were always unexpected.
