Chapter 658 When Marguerite arrived at the scene, she was just in tto see Penelope's car being lifted from the river. The crane hoisted the skeletal remains of the sedan, its windows shattered to pieces. Squinting, she could barely make out the remnants of blood stains on the car body.

Marguerite froze, her mind whirling in a dizzy haze as if the world around her blurred and faded into unreality. She saw Robert Fitzgerald supporting a shivering Hackett, while Yuna was sobbing uncontrollably behind the police tape. Gasping for breath, her cries piercing the air like the wail of a banshee.

Marguerite staggered over, her heart aching so fiercely she could hardly breathe. She couldn't fathom how someone she had been talking to just an hour ago could end up like this.

This pain took her back three years, to the morning she learned of her grandmother's death. She felt an unbearable sorrow, yet strangely, she couldn't shed a single tear. Because deep down, she refused to believe that Penelope was gone.

Her frail body trembling, Frederick saw Marguerite and immediately cto her aid. "How did you get here?" he asked gently.

Swallowing hard, Marguerite's gaze remained fixed on the wreckage hanging from the crane. "Penelope... she askedto meet her at the office. I had just arrived when Miley Goldie called me... said there had been an accident... It tookforever to find this place..." Panic made her speech falter.

Nearby, as the crane slowly lowered the car to the ground, officers in gloves began their investigation. Marguerite saw them retrieve sitems and place them into clear plastic bags, then approach Hackett and Robert.

"These are the owner's ID and phone. Please, confirm them." Hackett's face was streaked with tears, yet he made no sound. He couldn't bring himself to reach out. Robert supported Hackett, both of them lost in grief for a long moment before Frederick took the bag, handing it to them.

Robert, with trembling hands, took out the ID and looked at it. Despite being prepared, the truth hitting them made their eyes widen in disbelief. A tear finally fell. "It's... her..." Marguerite, her mind barely in control, grabbed an officer's arm and demanded: "Where is she? The car's owner, where is she? Why can't I see her?" The officer looked uncomfortable. "We've only found the vehicle so far. We haven't found her yet." Marguerite's heart sank, her legs nearly gave out beneath her but Frederick, with his quick reflexes, caught her and held her tightly.

She's not found? How could she not be found? Overwhelmed with grief, Marguerite then looked at the officer with a glimmer of hope, urgently asking: "So, if she hasn't been found, does that mean there's a chance she could still be alive?"

The officers exchanged glances, the difficulty of their situation creasing their brows. "In theory, yes. But the cliff is at least a hundred and sixty feet high, and the river below is frozen solid, it's unlikely that..." The officer was cut off by a colleague, a silent reminder that now was the tto comfort, not to add to their distress.

In that moment, Hackett's voice, cold as ice, demanded: "Marguerite! Penelope's last call was to you! What did she say?"

Marguerite saw that Hackett had Penelope's phone in his hand. But before she could answer, Yuna ran up and slapped Marguerite hard across the face.

"Marguerite, you curse! My mom is dead because of you! If you hadn't been on the phone with her while she was driving, she wouldn't have ended up in the river!"
