Jared's handsface stiffened, and he just stood there, silent for a long time.

When | stepped out again, Jared and Yvonne were sitting together on the couch, waiting for breakfast.
“Mom, where are you going?” Yvonne rushed over to me, sounding anxious.
It's Friday, and | have three classes today, so of course | need to hurry off to school.
“I'll cfind you this afternoon, and tomorrow I'll spend the whole day with you,” | said as | crouched down and
gently smoothed Yvonne's messy hair.
“Okay, what tdo you finish? Dad and | can cpick you up,” Yvonne said sweetly, being all considerate.
“Ill let you know when I'm done with class,” | replied, and without so much as a glance at Jared, | changed my
shoes and walked out.
The lobby of the Manor Hotel was bustling with people. This place always had a steady stream of guests, and
most of them looked pretty well-off.
As | walked, | glanced around, analyzing what exactly made this hotel so attractive to its clientele.

Just as | reached the entrance, | spotted a taxi and quickened my pace.
But out of nowhere, a sleek black Bentley pulled up, blocking my path.
As | was about to step around it, | heard Edward’s voice from the back seat. “I'll take you to school.”
| froze, totally surprised. Seriously? What was he doing here?
“No, really, I'll just catch a cab,” | said/quickly, thinking about last night's mess. After what happened, | doubted
Edward would even want to deal withanymore.

“Get in the car!” Edward's voice was way more forceful than usual. “We need to talk.”
My heart was pounding, and every rational thought in my head toldto just jump in the taxi and get out of
