Chapter 231: Just a Pawn
Chapter 231: Just a Pawn
(Sophia Rivers’ POV)
My eardrum throbbed with excruciating pain, the damaged tissue sending waves of agony through my skull. The
pack enforcement detention had leftwith a detached and necrotic eardrum, but | refused the surgery they
kept pushing on me.
| needed to stay alert. | needed to find a way to escape.
But as | lay here in this sterile Recovery Ward, staring at Marcus's cold golden eyes, the truth crashed over me
like a tidal wave. It wasn’t those damned she-wolves who had caused my misery.
It was him. The Alpha who had once shownsuch favor, such protection.
| had always known Marcus hatednow, but sfoolish part ofbelieved he still harbored a trace of pity
for a former pack member. How ridiculous that hope seemed now.
“You orchestrated all of this,” | whispered, my voice barely audible through my damaged hearing. “You let them
hurtin detention.”
Marcus's expression remained impassive. No denial. No explanation.
Just that terrible, calculating silence.
The realization hitlike a physical blow. Every moment of suffering, every degradation I'd endured - he had
allowed it all to happen. Perhaps even arranged it.
Tears streamed down my cheeks as intense hatred welled up in my eyes. My hand found the heavy medical
instrument on the bedside table - a metal tray used for surgical tools.
With all my remaining strength, | hurled it at him.
“You bastard!” | screamed.
Marcus raised his hand to block, his arm taking the blow with barely a flinch. The metal clattered to the floor with
a sharp ring.
Elena moved to step forward, but the pack nurse and doctor immediately restrained me, their hands gripping my
shoulders as | struggled against them.
A ferocious smile spread across my face as the truth poured out oflike poison.

“Marcus Blackwood! Do you think I love you?” | cried, my voice cracking with hysteria. “I never loved you! If it

The words felt like acid on my tongue, but they were liberating in their cruelty.
“Haha, Elena is suspicious of you, and you have that terminal illness! Retribution! This is the Moon Goddess'’s
retribution on you!”
(Elena Blackwood’s POV)
Sophia's screams filled the intensive healing ward, her voice echoing off the sterile walls like the wails of a
banshee. Her body thrashed against the medical staff holding her down, her face contorted with rage and
desperation.
Dr. Jonathan Pierce appeared with a sedative, quickly injecting it into her IV line. Gradually, her struggles
weakened, though her wails still echoed in the air like a dying animal's cry.
The flurry of white medical coats obscured my view as the staff worked to restrain and sedate her. | stood frozen,
my gaze fixed on Marcus's back.
His tall Alpha figure seemed so out of place in this sterile medical environment. So incongruous among the chaos
of Sophia’s breakdown.
When he finally turned, his golden eyes met mine for a brief moment. The weight of everything I'd witnessed -
his calculated cruelty, his methodical revenge - hung between us like a chasm.
| looked away and walked out of the intensive healing ward.
After removing the protective clothing in the changing room, | found Marcus waiting by the door. His presence
filled the narrow hallway, making the space feel smaller.
“You heard everything?” he asked, his voice low and hoarse.
“Yes, | heard everything,” | confirmed.
He was silent for a long moment, his golden eyes studying my face.
“However, what's the point of you doing this?” | asked calmly. “Taking revenge for David, don’t you think it's too
late?”
As far as | was concerned, everything that was going to happen had already happened. Even if our cracked mate
bond was somehow mended, even if we pretended nothing had occurred, wouldn't there still be fractures?
Marcus gave a faint hum. “It may not mean anything to you, but it’s meaningful enough for

| pursed my lips, ultimately saying nothing. What was there to say? The damage was done, on all sides.
The next day, Sophia’s surgery was scheduled. Other than Marcus and myself visiting her, no one else appeared.
Marcus’s words from the previous day seemed to have truly crushed her spirit. She lay weakly in the hospital
bed, listless since morning, staring at the ceiling with vacant eyes.
| stood outside the window, watching her through the glass. Calling her pitiful, yet she was also hateful.
From the moment she chose the path of betraying the pack, there was no turning back.
Rachel Thompson walked to my side, following my gaze to look inside. “Elena, do she will read that bloodline
verification document?”

| looked away from Sophia's prone form. “According to her personality, even if she doesn’t read it, she already
has the answer in her heart.”
Rachel nodded, then her expression grew worried. “But if David knows that his biological sister is her, I'm afraid
he won't be able to accept it?”
| fell silent. | didn’t really know how to tell David about this matter. Perhaps he could never know the truth about
his bloodline connection to Sophia.

The dismissive tone in his voice made my blood boil. With a forced laugh, I leaned back in my
chair.
“You and your father Fred Xavier are really alike, so heartless to she-wolves.

“When did you start missing my father?” he asked, his voice carrying that familiar teasing note that had once
charmed me.
Hearing his casual reference to Fred, my face darkened. | crossed my arms and leaned back in my chair, letting
my anger show.
“I have no nostalgia for your father, but Sophia gave you a son!”
