Her expression was calm and indifferent. She didn’t share Laura’s admiration for Magnus Zelinsky.

Magnus was undoubtedly intelligent, and she acknowledged his cleverness. But for her to be captivated by him?

That was out of the question. Her type wasn’t the scholarly kind.

“That's good to hear.”

Laura breathed a sigh of relief but then suddenly added, “If only your dad were here. He was quite skilled in

warfare, too. | wonder how he’s doing now?”

“Dad?” Claudette asked, her curiosity piqued.

Unable to resist her daughter's persistent questioning, and seeing as they had tto kill at the foot of the

mountain Laura decided to share the story of Claudette’s father, recounting his experiences and the intertwined

history of the Lenoir and Zelinsky families.

By the tshe finished, Claudette felt even more averse to Magnus. Even though Laura had emphasized that

her father’s abrupt reassignment had nothing to do with Magnus, the fact that he was part of the Zelinsky family

was enough to leave a bad taste in her mouth.

Meanwhile, Magnus had already changed into the Five Poison Sect’s uniform and put on one of their identity

necklaces. He approached their car window.

Though Laura repeatedly told her daughter not to fall for Magnus advances, she was the one who helpfully

rolled down the window to let them talk.

“Claudette, I'm heading into the Five Poison Sect’s territory. Stay safe out here,” Magnus said with concern.

“Alright, good luck!” Claudette replied nonchalantly, offering no further words of encouragement.

Magnus smiled warmly. “With a princess cheeringon, I'll be unstoppable as the knight. I'll crush the cult and

restore peace to the West End. It’s also part of my redemption for past mistakes.”

“So, you've done a lot of bad things before?” Claudette asked, following his lead.

“Perhaps they were bad in speople’s eyes,” Magnus admitted, his gaze resolute.

“But | had my reasons for doing what | did. That doesn’t change the fact that I've hurt many people- especially

someone very important to me. | feel immense guilt for that. | just hope | can make up for the mistakes I've

made.”

No one had ever told Claudette about her life before her memory loss, as they didn’t want to cause her further

pain. She had no idea that the person Magnus spoke of was her.

And Magnus had no intention of letting her find out either.

“A prodigal son who turns back is worth his weight in gold. Good luck to you, then.”

Claudette casually encouraged him. After all, he was about to risk his life for Mackenzie and for the people of the

West End.

Magnus smiled faintly and nodded, leaving with satisfaction

His goal was simple to instill in Claudette the idea thaj even a sinner could redeem himself. If he succeeded, then

Magnus, having known him for years, wasn’t bothered by his brash personality. With a calm smile, he replied, “If

“Fair enough!”

Quintus slapped his own forehead before suddenly growing curious. “Magnus, from what | know about you,

you're a sharp guy. You wouldn't risk your life for nothing. Charging into the Five Poison Sect’s lair without some

sort of payoff doesn’t seem like your usual style.”

Magnus didn’t answer, nor did he repeat what he had just said to Claudette. Instead, he gave a brief command.

“Let's move. Mackenzie made it clear that once we're inside, I'm in charge. Don’t try anything reckless.”

He understood Quintus well. Without Mackenzie's orders, he would never follow anyone else’s lead.

“Fine, we'll talk more once were inside.”

Quintus bellowed loudly, “Assemble!”

The forty-person squad quickly gathered. Braving the howling wind and snow, they marched toward a

checkpoint.

The checkpoint stood at the meeting point of two towering mountains, a breathtaking display of nature's rugged

beauty. Beyond the entrance, the only other path to the Serpent Altar was to brave the perilous, snow-covered

peaks.

The checkpoint itself consisted of solid stone structures, heavily fortified and well-manned by guards.

According to the intelligence obtained from Mauve Protector, if the guards pulled the alarm, reinforcements

would flood out from the nearby base in no time.

“Halt! Who goes there?”

As soon as they approached, the squad leader of the guards stepped out with his men to question them.

“You don’t even recognize Mauve Protector?” Quintus shouted arrogantly, just as Magnus had instructed him to

act.

The more overbearing he seemed, the less suspicion it would arouse.

The squad leader saw that Mauve Protector was being carried back on a stretcher and couldn’t hide his surprise.

In a cold tone, he demanded, “What's going on here? Why is Mauve Protector so badly hurt?”

“He was attacked by Mackenzie and her group!” Quintus answered, sticking to Magnus script.
