She cdown hugging the box of ancient books, and saw Lucas standing by the car, looking as calm and
composed as ever-with just a faint trace of pleasure in his expression.

Lucas smiled and opened the car door for her. “Mr. Calvin cleared his schedule when he heard you'd acquired

Lucas shut the door and circled to the driver's side. “No need to thank me. Mr. Calvin's actually very interested

The car cruised steadily out of the city and into the quiet outskirts, eventually pulling up in front of a traditional
courtyard home.
Just as they stepped inside, a hearty voice rang out, “You little rascal, you finally decided to visit me!”
Sloane looked up and saw an energetic old man watering flowers in the courtyard.
Lucas laughed and stepped forward. “You know how it is-work’s been crazy. But | dropped everything the
moment | had time.”
Sloane followed closely behind as Lucas took the watering can and began helping Mr. Calvin.
It was the first tshe'd seen Lucas act this familiar with anyone.
Mr. Calvin handed the watering can off to Lucas, then turned and looked at Sloane. A teasing gleam flashed in his
eye.
