Chapter 1030

For the next three days, Evadne didn't go back to her cottage in Emsworth. Not only was Alva waiting there for

her, but the place overflowed with memories of her and Thaddeus—every corner a reminder of when she'd loved

him.

Even setting foot there felt like being sliced open.

She couldn't bring herself to go hto Silverlake Harbor, either-didn't want Emeric to worry, or to face her

family's questions. So, she checked into a room at a downtown KS Group hotel, and holed up there for three

nights, barely sleeping or eating.

Now that she'd lost Thaddeus's love, she felt like driftwood-unmoored, with nowhere to belong.

On the fourth day, her eldest brother, Elvis, and Jason finally tracked her down.

When they arrived, Evadne was a cocoon under the covers, the curtains drawn so tight that the room was pitch-

black, even though it was midday. She was dead to the world and didn't hear the knocking.

The three men panicked. They called for the manager, who opened the door with a master key.

The suite was a disaster. Not a single sliver of daylight crept in. Clothes were tossed over the couch, shoes

scattered like casualties on the floor-one by the window, one by the door.

But what really broke them was the mountain of takeout containers on the coffee table-half-eaten pizza crusts,

empty Ben & Jerry's pints, and a graveyard of beer

bottles.

"She's punishing herself. This is insane!" Aaron's voice cracked with emotion, his chest twisting as if someone

was carving him up from the inside. "All this over a guy? Seriously? So what if he's gone? If he doesn't love you,

then screw him! You think he's worth turning your life into this mess?"

"If we'd known it would end like this," he went on, "I'd have made damn sure you walked away for good and

never looked back! Thaddeus is a walking disaster-he should've been alone forever. Anyone who gets mixed up

with him is just cursed!"

Jason, technically the family's employee, couldn't chin with the sintensity, but the pain on his face was

plain. He quietly started folding Evadne's clothes, setting her shoes neatly by the door.

Ever since he'd beca fiancé and soon-to-be dad, Jason had gotten even more meticulous. Back when

Evadne first got divorced, he'd

looked after her for months, making

sure she ate, slept, and did making

apart.

But as he gathered up the empty fast-food wrappers and beer bottles, his composure finally cracked. Shoulders

shaking, he ducked his head and let the tears fall.

To them, Evadne was the best woman in the world.

What had she done in a past life to deserve all this heartbreak? Why did every

good thing in her life seem to end in disaster?

Cassius Ashbourne stood in the

corner, silent, his tall frame

trembling with the effort of holding back his emotions. Even when Evadne had been thrown out of the Abernathy

mansion after he divorce, she hadn't been this lost. Content

This time, it was as if someone had smashed her spirit to pieces. The light she used to carry seemed gone,

ground into the dust.

Face dark as thunder, Cassius strode over and threw open the bedroom door-

Pitch black inside, except for the faint outline of Evadne's head poking out from beneath the blankets, the rest of

her curled up like a stray kitten, hair tangled, pajamas rumpled and dirty.

"Cassius, maybe let her rest a bit. She's just... exhausted," Jason tried to intervene, sensing Cassius's anger

about to explode.

"Resting? You call this resting?" Cassius snapped, pushing Jason aside and marching up to the bed. If she can't

handle this, how am I. supposed to trust her with KS Group, or with the Ashbourne family legacy? She's our hope.

She's Dad's pride. Is this how she plans to live up to that?"

He stood by the bed for a moment, torn, and then-unable to hold back-he yanked the comforter off.

Evadne lay there, pale face buried in tangled hair, looking so small and helpless, curled in on herself like a

homeless kitten.

"Evadne, what the hell are you doing to yourself?"
