Rebecca watched Daniel make the phone call. "Daniel, maybe we should just let it go. You can't turn your back

on your own father for me."

Daniel slipped his arm around her. "Don't worry, Rebecca. My dad's a reasonable man. I'm sure once he meets

you, he'll like you just as much as | do."

Who could possibly dislike a kind girl like Rebecca?

"Really?" Rebecca blushed, a little shy.

"Really!"

Meanwhile, in the Christensen family's groom, Anthea and Sherman were locked in a tense chess match.

Neither gave an inch, each move calculated, the pieces clicking softly on the board.

Anthea raised her brow. "I've never met anyone who could actually challengebefore. You're only the second."

Most games, she barely had to think.

But with Sherman—and that infuriating stranger from online-it was different.

Both of them were masters, the kind who demanded your full attention. The tiniest distraction, and you'd be left

with a board in ruins.

Sherman paused, rolling a chess piece between his fingers. "So who was the first?"

Anthea set a piece on the board, her fingertips lingering. "Someone you wouldn't know."

Why couldn't he ever know these people?

That strange sense of familiarity crept over him again. It was uncomfortable-like

a pressure trapped in his chest.

Anthea continued, "I think you and that person would be evenly matched."

Sherman only grunted in response.

Just then, Sherman's phone buzzed. He answered, listened, and his expression tightened.

After a moment, he ended the call, his face clouded.

"What is it?" Anthea asked, curiosity piqued.

He hesitated, then said, "Daniel's going to marry Rebecca."

Anthea let out a short laugh. "Looks like your brother's been properly fooled by Rebecca. Can't wait to play the

hero, huh?"

"Can't fix stupid."

Anthea's tone shifted. "I think there's something fishy about Sandra's death. Maybe... it has something to do with

Rebecca."

Sherman picked up a chess piece, his interest piqued. "What makes you say that?"

Anthea met his gaze. “After Sandra died, didn't Rebecca get Daniel totell your family that her mom had passed

her dad's still in prison and she hoped you'd help her out, for old times' sake?"

Sherman nodded, thinking back. "Yeah, she did."

"Exactly. That's why I'm convinced

Rebecca's involved in Sandra's death" Anthea leaned in. "When | went to the fun went to the

out Sandra had taken sleeping pills before she died. But Sandra wasn't the type to kill herself. So why take

sleeping pills?"

She tapped the board. "My guess? When Rebecca found out your family wasn't bankrupt, she got a nasty fight

with Sandra. With Rebecca's personality, she

Her words were quiet but unshakable, sinking deep into his thoughts.

Sherman rubbed the chess piece between his fingers, brow furrowed.

"Check!" Anthea captured Sherman's king. "Want to find out if Rebecca really had a hand in Sandra's death?"

Sherman nodded. "You have a plan?"

"Of course," Anthea replied smoothly. "Bring Daniel tonight. Seven-thirty, next door

to Rebecca's place. I'll treat you both to quite a show."

"Do you need my help?" Sherman asked.

"No need." Anthea waved him off.

She'd already looked into Rebecca's schedule-Rebecca had plans during the

day and wouldn't be huntil seven-thirty that night.

It was only mid-morning. Plenty of time.

By seven-thirty, the pieces were in place.

Daniel had been less than cooperative, so Sherman's men had all but dragged

him into the neighboring house.

Now Daniel sat tied to a chair, glaring daggers at Sherman. "What the hell are you doing?"

"Just sit back and enjoy the show," Sherman replied, turning on a monitor mounted on the wall.

The screen flickered to a live feed-Rebecca's living room.

Daniel's face went pale. "What are you going to do to Rebecca?" He struggled against the ropes, panic rising.

Sherman nodded to his men, who quickly sealed Daniel's mouth with tape.

On the screen, Rebecca trudged through her front door, her steps heavy. The moment she entered, she paused,

immediately sensing something was wrong.
