Through rehab, Amelia had begun to open up about her finances. Rebecca was finally coming to terms with the

fact that May hadn’t been exaggerating; her mother was genuinely wealthy.

The asset transfer agreement she’d seen before represented only a fraction of her mother’s total fortune. A

significant amount was still unaccounted for,

Amelia assured Rebecca there was no need to worry about money ever again and encouraged her to focus solely

on building the life she wanted. She even mentioned that if Rebecca wanted to quit her job, the penalty fee

would be trivial.

So lost in these revelations, Rebecca barely registered the car pulling up to Rebecca's Manor. Once they arrived,

she stepped out and headed straight for the villa.

After Victor informed her that Jeffrey wasn’t hyet, she decided to go upstairs for a shower and a change of

clothes.

It was exactly nine o'clock when Jeffrey finally showed up, cutting a sharp figure in his suit.

Victor stepped forward, “Mr. Hanson, Ms. Jensen's waiting for you in the study. She wants to talk to you.”

Jeffrey glanced up at the second floor, his eyes unreadable, and gave a slight nod.

A few moments later, the study door creaked open.

Rebecca looked up when she heard the sound. Jeffrey stepped inside, unbuttoning his suit jacket. His dark eyes

were unreadable, his voice low and steady as ever. “Victor said you wanted to talk?”

“Yeah,” Rebecca nodded.

Jeffrey hung his jacket up and turned to face her. “What is it?”

Noticing Jeffrey’s calm demeanor, Rebecca didn't beat around the bush. “I want to resign-I need to be at the

hospital to take care of my mom.”

Jeffrey’s movements were smooth as he rolled up his shirt sleeves, forearms flexing. “The doctor said she’ll be

up and walking in a month. I'll approve a month's leave for you. No need to hand in your resignation.”

Rebecca shook her head, her voice firm. “I really want to quit.”

Rebecca thought to herself, ‘Is there really any other way to leave besides quitting? | know it’s not very

responsible to PrimePlay Technologies, but with that 3-million penalty fee, they can easily find someone who's

even better thanto take over.

Jeffrey took a sip of water, sounding as steady as usual. “I thought you really liked this job. It's the first gyou

ever worked on, and you even went out of town for training because of it.

Jeffrey could read Rebecca’s mind, even if she didn’t say it out loud. He let it slide, giving her a chance to decide

for herself.

“I'm not giving up, it’s just... right now, something feels more important, Rebecca said, trying her best to sound

convincing. “Even if Mom can start walking after a month, it'll be a long tbefore she really gets back to the

way she was

“As soon as she’s back on her feet, I'll have the best rehab team chere to take care of her,” Jeffrey replied,

leaving her no room to argue.

Rebecca shot back, “I just can’t trust anyone else with her.”

Jeffrey's gaze locked onto hers.

Rebecca felt a twinge of guilt but didn’t let it show. “Just like after | gave birth to Samuel, you couldn't trust

anyone else to take care of me.”

Back then, even an expensive maternity center wasn’t good enough for Jeffrey. He still had to personally handle

everything for her.

“Take the month off first,” he said, sitting down beside her, his voice softer now. “If you still want to leave after

that, Ill approve it. This job means a lot to you. | don’t want you making a rash decision.”

Rebecca couldn't help but wonder. In the past, whenever she mentioned quitting, Jeffrey would agree

immediately, reminding her she didn’t need to work and he could provide for her. ‘Is he stalling?‘ she thought.

‘Or does he actually care about what | want?‘

“How does that sound?” Jeffrey asked.

“Alright,” Rebecca replied, keeping it brief. She knew from experience that the more she tried to explain, the

more Jeffrey would start to question her motives.

“I've been pretty busy these last few days, so | haven't made it to the hospital,” Jeffrey said, his concern obvious.

“How’s your mom? Is she still having difficulty speaking?”

Rebecca replied in a flat voice, “She’s good. Her speech is almost back to normal.” Amelia could talk just fine,

but screaming or shouting was still out of the question for now.

“Rebecca,” Jeffrey said, his voice dropping and softer than usual.

Rebecca shot him a sideways glance. “What's up?”

Jeffrey's eyes met hers. He already suspected the answer, but still asked, “Now that your mom's awake, have

you ever thought about just taking her and Samuel and leaving?”

Jeffrey thought to himself, ‘If she’s honest, we can talk about it. But if she lies to me, she shouldn't come

complaining if | stop caring about how she feels’

“Why suddenly ask something like that?” Rebecca didn’t really give him a straight answer.

“Just answer me,” Jeffrey pressed. He was never one to let a topic go unless he wanted to.

“Not at the moment,” Rebecca hedged, still not knowing why he’d bring it up. She tried to brush past it, giving

him a half-truth. “But if you ever treatbadly, or don’t keep your word, that’s a whole different story.”

Honestly, Rebecca knew deep down, her idea of “good” and Jeffrey's were miles apart. Sooner or later, she was

bound to leave.

Jeffrey caught the growing distance in Rebecca’s expression and said quietly, “Then let's both do our part and

keep our word.”

“I should head back to the hospital,” Rebecca said, trying to steer the conversation away. ‘I can’t stand another

second in this place,’ she thought, “Mom’s got another rehab session tomorrow, and | need to be there.”

“You're not staying here?” Jeffrey asked.

Rebecca didn’t even have to think about it. “No.”

His intense eyes fixed on her. He could sense her pulling away, already preparing to cut ties. She wouldn't even

spend one night under the sroof.

“What's wrong?” Rebecca's heart tightened under his gaze. It felt like he could see straight through all her

thoughts and secrets.

“I'll take you,” Jeffrey said evenly, not giving anything away. He wanted to see just how well Rebecca could keep

things hidden. “And | might as well go check on your mom, too.”

Rebecca smiled, “Con, | got it.”

“Let's go,” Jeffrey said, gently.

“Mom'’s already asleep by now,” Rebecca explained. “If you want to see her, you should ctomorrow.

Tomorrow's Saturday, so you'll have plenty of time.”

“That's one reason, sure. But honestly, | just don't like you riding over there so late at night by yourself,” Jeffrey

murmured, softly tucking a strand of hair behind her ear. “Con, let's go.”

Rebecca knew she couldn't keep refusing without it looking suspicious.

Sliding into the passenger seat next to Jeffrey, Rebecca’s mind was already spinning. ‘How am | going to handle

him once the divorce proceedings start? Even if we escape, Jeffrey has the resources to track us down whenever

he wants."

“Why the long face?” Jeffrey noticed, glancing at her.

“It’s nothing,” Rebecca said softly, not wanting to explain.

Jeffrey kept his voice casual, but there was an edge to it. “You figuring out how to pull off a clean divorce from

me?”

Rebecca's heart went tight, and for a split second, she was totally paralyzed.

“Relax, I'm just kidding,” Jeffrey said, brushing it off like it was nothing. He didn’t let his expression give

anything away, though he could tell from her face that he’d hit a nerve.

He continued, “Once your mom's asleep tonight, you can use the lounge upstairs. It's more comfortable than the

hospital room.”

“The hospital room's fine,” Rebecca said, sidestepping the offer. “I have to be close in case Mom needs me.

Jeffrey fixed his gaze on her.

Rebecca held her ground. “I mean it.”

“You always say things twice when you feel guilty,” he pointed out, his voice almost tender. “I get it if you don’t

want to be near me. But you don’t have to push away everything else, too.”

Rebecca just pressed her lips together.

Jeffrey looked at her calmly. “Still quiet?”
