Chapter 26

“Stop right there, Ariana Torrey!”

During the intermission, Ariana excused herself to go to the bathroom when she heard Brian's voice sound from

behind her.

“Mr. Lodge? Did you need something?” She turned back, her voice distant, as if they were but mere acquainters

“Aren't you something else, Ariana? You knew that my company had its eye on that piece of land in South

Gleaston, and you went and doubled the price, even at a loss, to buy it. What's your game? Are you really

opposing me, or are you just trying to get my attention?” Brian snapped.

“You've got the wrong idea, Mr. Lodge. I just really liked the location. It’s got nothing to do with you.” Ariana said

sincerely. However, Brian did not believe a word of it.

Just then, Evelyn rushed over to cut into their conversation “Ms. Torrey, you were too impulsive. That piece of

land will lose you a small fortune!”

Then, glancing at Brian, she continued, “I know that Brian bringinghere tonight might have embarrassed

you, but you can’t just do that. Even if you wanted to get your own back, it shouldn't be done so rashly. To the

end it’s still Brian who will have to clean up after you. What's the point in all this, then?”

Brian scoffed at that. “You set the price, Ariana. You can pay for that yourself.”

“Of course | will, Mr. Lodge, what are you talking about? We've already called off the engagement. My finance

have nothing to do with you now,” Ariana said.

Brian's face darkened. “You...”

Just then, William emerged from the auction hall. When Ariana saw him, she raised her voice and called out with

a smile, “William!”

The way she addressed him by his first nmade Brian's face darken further.

Ariana walked over to William and took his arm. “Is the intermission almost over? We should head back soon,

then. After all, I've had my eye set on the land at Goldfront Bay for quite snow. Mr. Lodge, Ms. Granger, it's

been a pleasure.”

She nodded at Brian and Evelyn politely before leaving.

Evelyn could feel the coldness emanating from Brian. “Brian..”

She glanced at him uneasily. She couldn't believe Ariana would dare to act so openly affectionate with William

right in front of Brian-especially since William was Brian's bitter rival.

“Damn you, Ariana. I've underestimated you,” Brian said, clenching his fists. He'd never been treated with such

disregard before.

The way Ariana had taken William's hand as she walked away earlier was a clear demonstration of power.

Did she really think he couldn't live without her?

“Emily.”

“Yes, Mr. Lodge.”

“The Goldfront Bay plot-we’ll be raising the bid to five billion dollars. Ariana’s eager to get the land for William.

In that case, I'll make sure he takes a huge loss!” Brian said coldly.

“But Mr. Lodge, what if he doesn’t take the bait?”

“With all the hype we've stirred up before this, he wouldn't resist. | want him to pay more than he expected and

let him work for nothing this year!”

“Yes, sir.”

Back in the auction hall, Ariana and William took their seat

“I just stepped out to use the bathroom, and you usedas a shield?” William said lightly.

“Didn’t you enjoy seeing Brian's expression?” Ariana asked slyly.

“I did, actually.”

“Just wait,” Ariana told him. “He's a petty man, so he'll definitely raise the bid again just to make you lose more

money.”
