In the auction hall, the guests had taken their seats.

Brian stared across the hall, watching as Ariana and William chatted merrily with each other. His voice turned

First, she had acted like Evelyn to make him like her. Then, she put on a demure act in front of Belinda. Even as
she declared her intention to break off the engagement, she still visited Belinda all the time, trying to get into
her good books.
And now, she was cozying up to William, at the sttelling Gwen to apologize to her and plead for

“How should | know?” Ariana said offhandedly. “He loves Evelyn, not me. He couldn't wait to break off the
engagement with me. He only got engaged to ine because my family is useful to him.”
She laughed, suddenly seeing the ridiculousness of it all. “bet you, if Brian had stayed with me, he would have
swallowed up my family’s assets within three years, divorced me, and married Evelyn.”
William did not miss the dark humor in her eyes. “He sounds like a bastard,” he said slowly. “No wonder you hate
him so much.”
The auction was starting. The land at Goldfront Bay was scheduled to be the last item on auction. The auctions
before that were just smaller pieces of land, suitable for private villas but of little strategic value.
Finally, the auctioneer announced, “Eight acres of land in South Gleaston. We'll start the bid at 100 million
dollars.
