Chapter 1609:
Freya started to nudge him back, but he was already back in the driver's seat. Nina, watching from the back,
grinned with mischief.
Strapped in her car seat, her eyes twinkled. “Dad, want us to step out for a bit?”
“For what?” Ellis asked, cool as a cucumber.
“Weren't you just trying to kiss Mommy but got shy because we're here?” Nina teased.
Ellis started the car, unfazed. “Shy? That's not in my vocabulary.”
“I don’t buy it,” Nina said, crossing her arms. “Weren't you ever embarrassed when you were chasing Mommy?”
“Not once,” Ellis said, calm and confident.
“You're lying,” Nina shot back.
“Ask our friends if you don’t believe me,” Ellis said, giving her a way to check.
Nina's bright eyes flickered with curiosity as she wondered if Ellis was being honest or just pulling her leg.
Ellis caught her gaze in the rearview mirror and said with a grin, “Why don’t you check with Jesse?”
“Jesse, is Dad telling the truth?” Nina's voice was gentle.
Jesse, always wise beyond his years, turned to her and said, “Look at yourself for the answer.”
“Me?” Nina, far chattier than her brother, tilted her head in wonder.
Jesse shifted his eyes from the window to her. “Do you ever feel nervous playing with Jerome?” he asked.
“Not at all!” Nina shot back, her words quick and sure. “Jergets shy fast. If | acted nervous, it'd make him
feel worse.”
If she ever felt uneasy, it was only to spare Jerome's feelings. Her dad always told her to dive into everything
with confidence.

“Exactly.” Jesse nodded, getting it completely. “Dad’s just like you.” Nina frowned, puzzled at first, but then her
face lit up as it clicked.
Freya, listening to her kids talk, felt a twinge of worry stir in her chest. At home, the kids washed up and headed
to their rooms, while Freya and Ellis got ready for bed.
Ellis noticed Freya's thoughtful look as she dried her hair. Setting the hairdryer down, he ruffled her hair gently.
“What's got you so quiet?”
“Don’t you think Jesse and Nina are growing up too fast?” Freya asked, her voice tinged with concern. It wasn’t
the first tshe’d brought this up.
She'd once fretted over Jesse seeming too grown-up.
But now, she realized the two kids seemed to understand love and feelings so well.
Ellis settled beside her, playing clueless. “Are they?”
“Yes,” Freya said, her tone firm.
