Chapter 435
“Her name’s Maja. Mom, she was handpicked by Holden himself. Even if it pisses off the rest of the
Raymond family, her status is rock solid.”
Edith caught the gist and sneered, “Give her a ring; tell her to come over tomorrow. I want to see what’s
so special about this woman who married lan.” Edith and Grandpa Holden didn’t really see eye–to–eye.
She used to visit home just once a year. But after Eric hit a rough patch, she moved out and never
came back.
Edith’s favorite grandchild was Eric; she loved him like the apple of her eye. Towards lan, she was even
more of a hardass.
Tomorrow, because tonight the Raymond family was having a dinner party at the Raymond Mansion,
and it wouldn’t do to have Maja over and stir the pot. Once Edith’s back, the younger crowd should all
come to pay their respects.
But Holden and lan still didn’t show.
The next day, Maja got the memo from the Raymond family to head over to Raymond Mansion. Only

never
She’d been married to lan for three years, but she’d never met Edith.
That said, she’d heard from Grandpa Holden that Edith wasn’t exactly a walk in the park.
She picked up the painting Herbert had given her. It was originally intended as a gift for Edith.
When Maja arrived at Raymond Mansion, the doorman rolled his eyes at her.”
This wasn’t Maja’s first rodeo, but every time she came, Selena would give her a piece of her mind.
Over time, the doormen started to take their cue from Selena.
Maja didn’t sweat it. She followed the doorman into the hall. Right away, she spotted an old woman in
loose clothes. She didn’t look friendly; she was
more stern.
“Grandma Edith.” She greeted respectfully. From the look they exchanged, she knew she wasn’t
exactly Edith’s cup of tea.
Edith sized up Maja as if she were shopping for a new product.
“Stand,” Edith commanded.
Maja bowed her head, not daring to sit.
“What’s that you’re holding?” Grandma Edith asked, sipping her tea and giving Maja a sideways
glance. Her attitude was snobbish, as if talking to Maja was a gift.
Maja unrolled the painting.
“This is a piece by Master Herbert. I know you’re a fan, so I brought it especially for you.”
She hoped this would put her in Edith’s good graces.
At the mention of Master Herbert, Edith’s eyebrow twitched.
However, when she saw that the painting was identical to the one Carlene had given her, she scoffed.
There was no doubt about it; it must be a fake. After all, Carlene had already given her the real deal..
“Your name is Maja, is it?” Edith asked.
Maja nodded. “Grandma Edith, is there something you need?”

“Do you think I’m senile, that I can’t tell a fake from the real thing?” Edith challenged.
Maja furrowed her brow, watching as Edith tossed the painting on the ground.
“Go kneel outside, under the sun. Don’t get up until I say you can.” Edith commanded.
Maja stayed quiet; it was clear that Edith had called her over to apply some pressure.
Maja knew Edith was a handful, but she hadn’t expected this level of difficulty.
Maja bent down, carefully rolling up the painting.
She silently turned around, walked out into the courtyard, and knelt under the sun.
Watching her straight back, Edith felt a surge of anger.
“Such a sense of superiority from a bookworm. So what if she’s had a few years of schooling?”
Just then, Selena came down from upstairs. Seeing Maja kneeling, a smirk flashed across her face.
“Mom, what happened?”
Grandma Edith scoffed, “Maja was in a hurry to kiss my ass and tried to pull the wool over my eyes
with a knockoff Herbert. With her character, she’s not
fit to shine lan’s shoes.”
