Chapter 297
Clara said, “I need to double-check the final design draft one more time; it might be up for review by everyone
tomorrow. I got to go deal with it now, and you should hit the hay early if you’ve got nothing else to do.”
With that, she headed for her computer.
Emmett watched her retreating figure, a sense of unease creeping up…
He didn’t deliberately keep the news about the kid’s biological mother from her, he just felt it was too harsh to spill
the beans.
Clara might seem easygoing, but she was thoughtful. She’d brought up the topic of the kid’s biological mother
before.

Clara looked up, a sense of tension creeping up, “What’s up?”
A sinking feeling hit her, fearing that Emmett might have discovered something…
“I wanna talk about us leaving the Melendez family.”
“Again, with that? Did your mom say something to tick you off?”
“No, it’s just that living with them is a real pain, and both Aiden and Alex think Grandma’s being too bossy! A visit
over the weekends should do. You know how much of a bummer grandparenting is.”
Clara pondered momentarily at him, then asked, “Did your mom bad-mouth me again?”
Otherwise, Emmett wouldn’t have brought up the separation again.
“No, really, no!” Emmett sat next to her, reaching out to rub her hands,” want our family to be peaceful, not always
at odds, which is not what you are constantly giving in leads to.”
Clara laughed happily as she said, “I really didn’t…”
“No need to explain. I get it. I-admit I can’t mediate between you and my mom. That’s why distancing ourselves is
the only solution I can think of.”
“Also, it might not be as bad as you think. Once we start living separately, my mom might feel relieved and even
change her attitude toward you. Who knows?”
Clara pondered awfully, “If you think it’s necessary, I’ll go with it.”
Emmett lifted Clara’s chin and kissed her lightly, “All right, don’t burn the midnight oil after you finish checking the
design. I won’t bother you tonight.”
Clara smiled, thinking she’d definitely wait for him to fall asleep before going to bed.

the past!
Emmett returned to bed.
After a while, Clara heard his steady breathing. She took a deep breath and shifted her focus back to her design
draft.
Suddenly!
An app notification popped up on her phone, indicating that her period was three days late!
Clara was taken aback. How could this happen?
She’d been so swamped at work recently that she’d forgotten about her period. She wasn’t pregnant, was she?
Clara fearfully glanced at the sleeping Emmett and quickly deleted the reminder on her phone.
She thought to herself that she’d sneak out to buy a pregnancy test right after handling her work stuff tomorrow
morning.
Clara tried to refocus on her design draft, but the reminder kept flashing in her mind.
