Chapter 348 The Gruesome Sight
The old ghost in black let out a sinister chuckle that sent shivers down Jonathan's spine. “I am simply following Wretched the Great's orders to invite you over, Mr. Lawson. That was just a little joke. I hope you don't mind.”
“That joke wasn't funny at all,” Jonathan said calmly.
“Let's go, Mr. Lawson,” said the old ghost in black with a smile.
Honestly, this guy's attitude is really getting on my nerves here. I would've taught him a lesson if it weren't for Wretched!
“Lead the way,” Jonathan said.
“Sure thing!” The old ghost then turned into a cloud of black smoke and quietly floated out of the hotel room.
Jonathan couldn't fly, so he couldn't follow the old ghost if he went out through the window.
“Wait here. I won't be gone for long,” he said to Vananeru, who was still clinging to him in his embrace, as he stepped out of the hotel room.
Vananeru's face was pale as she shook her head profusely. Whatever had just happened had scared her so much that it left a lingering fear in her heart.
Her refusal to stay behind put Jonathan in a difficult position.
“I want to see how my father is doing,” Vananeru said.
Jonathan didn't want to bring her along because he didn't want her to see Galad.
Wretched has probably been torturing the living daylights out of Galad!
“Please take me with you...” Vananeru pleaded when she saw the hesitant look on Jonathan's face. She was beginning to tear up, and she looked as though she would start crying if Jonathan said no to her request.
Jonathan let out a helpless sigh when he saw the look in her eyes. “All right, then.”
Vananeru breathed a huge sigh at that.
The old ghost continued leading the way after they stepped out of the hotel.
Although the old ghost in black was going really fast, Jonathan had no issues keeping up with it. Vananeru, on the other hand, had a lot of difficulty doing so.
“Come on, I'll carry you on my back!” he said to her anxiously.
Fearing that he would leave her behind if she couldn't keep up, Vananeru nodded profusely after a brief moment of hesitation.
Jonathan bent over so Vananeru could climb onto his back.

When he felt her breasts pressing against his back, he felt a strange sensation surging through his body.
Jonathan had looked at countless women in the past, so he knew that Vananeru's breasts weren't exactly big. She was still unmarried, so her body had yet to fully develop. If anything, she looked more like a delicate little princess from a wealthy family.
Vananeru's face was burning bright red. Not only were her breasts pressing against Jonathan's back, but he was also grabbing her sensitive bottom with both hands.
While Vananeru wasn't exactly comfortable with the physical contact they were making, Jonathan didn't have much of a choice in that regard. In order to keep up with the old ghost's speed, he needed to ensure that he had a firm grip on Vananeru.
Of course, that feeling of discomfort was only temporary, and Vananeru stopped feeling shy after a while.
Despite carrying Vananeru on his back, Jonathan barely broke a sweat as he ran at full speed.
He wasn't even panting throughout the entire journey as they headed south after passing by Royalty River.
Vananeru gasped in shock when she realized how strong Jonathan was.
She had always assumed Jonathan was weak, especially since he was indeed weak when they faced Pedor.
Two hours later, at about two in the morning, Jonathan and the others came to a halt somewhere far away from Mapleton.
Although Jonathan had traveled on foot, he was not moving any slower than a car. Besides, there were plenty of shortcuts that could only be taken while on foot. Had he been driving instead, he would've had to go a long way around.
Although Jonathan had traveled on foot, he was not moving any slower than a car. Besides, there were plenty of shortcuts that could only be taken while on foot. Had he been driving instead, he would've had to go a long way around.
The sky was clear, with no moon or star in sight.
Having left the hustle and bustle of the big city, they arrived at what appeared to be a village of some sort.
Although Mapleton was very advanced and well-developed, the areas outside of it were not.
In fact, one could barely find a decent-looking building in that village.
Before entering the village, Jonathan spotted a majestic temple in the distance.
That was a unique characteristic of the people of Thymion. They insisted on respecting their religion regardless of how poor they were.
The village had a population of over one thousand, so it wasn't exactly a small village either.
Even so, the place was terrifyingly silent at that hour.
Jonathan picked up a really intense negative energy even before he entered the village.
As he glanced about, he noticed that the village was shrouded in a black layer of negative energy within a ten-mile radius.
This is a total ghost town! Wait a minute... If this place has become a ghost town, then that means Wretched has already started killing people! This village may be a little far away from Mapleton, but it's still fairly close to the capital city. There's no way the king would allow a village next to the capital city to be turned into a ghost town. Exorcists would've been sent over long ago!
While Jonathan shuddered at the thought of that, Vananeru was completely oblivious to the situation.
“Wretched the Great is waiting inside that temple, Mr. Lawson,” the old ghost in black said before quickly flying off and disappearing from sight.
The only reason Wretched had sent that old ghost after Jonathan was that he could speak Chanaean, so the language barrier wouldn't be an issue.
As the two continued making their way forward, Jonathan could clearly feel that they were being watched by countless ghosts hiding in the shadows. They even heard bone-chilling laughter from time to time, much to Vananeru's horror.
She was so scared that she clung tightly to Jonathan as they carried on walking.
It wasn't long before they arrived at the temple.
There was a huge empty compound in front where the villagers could dry out paddy by spreading the grains under the sun.
Although they were in pitch-black darkness, Jonathan felt the empty compound in front of them dripping with negative energy.
The next thing he knew, a bright light shot up into the sky as a hundred braziers started burning brightly all of a sudden.
The light from the flames illuminated the area as though it was daytime.
Vananeru screamed in terror when she saw the gruesome sight before them.
Even Jonathan was frozen in shock when he saw the bloodied bodies of thousands of villagers lying in the compound.
All sorts of ghastly beings could be seen feeding off the flesh and blood of those bodies.
Among the beings were humans, demons, and monsters of all sorts.
It was so terrifying and bizarre that even special effects in movies couldn't possibly create a scene such as this.
For a moment there, Jonathan felt as though he was staring at the gates of the underworld.
As Jonathan and Vananeru were live human beings, their presence instantly shocked all the monstrous creatures in front of them.
Vananeru closed her eyes in fear when she saw them all turn around in unison.
Even someone as tough as Jonathan had goosebumps all over.
A few of the demons roared and charged in his direction.
They were incredibly vicious and wanted nothing more than to eat Jonathan alive.
The other demons in the area, too, got all riled up and followed suit.
Right then, a powerful and authoritative voice rang out in the distance.
“You insolent fools! They are my guests! If you hurt them in any way, I will rip you to pieces on the spot! You will never be able to reincarnate then!”
That voice belonged to none other than Wretched itself.

It felt rather surreal seeing all the demonic creatures fearing and respecting Wretched so deeply.
As Jonathan and Vananeru looked over, they saw Wretched standing before them.
Although Wretched still retained its beast-like body, its face had turned into that of a normal human's.
Its incredibly muscular body was three meters tall, and its black scales gleamed in the moonlight.
With a black cape on its shoulders and a crown on its head, Wretched looked as authoritative and domineering as an actual king.
For the first time, Jonathan felt he didn't recognize Wretched anymore.
Gone was the adorable and kind-hearted cacodemon who used to call him “Daddy.”
Jonathan stood perfectly still as Wretched slowly made his way toward them.
Vananeru, on the other hand, was shivering in fear and anxiety.
Jonathan looked up at Wretched and asked with a smile, “Hello, Wretched the Great. Do I have to kneel before you as well?”
Wretched froze upon hearing that, and a conflicted look formed in its eyes.
After a few seconds of silence, it shook its head and said, “No. You never have to.”
Jonathan felt a little touched when he saw that Wretched still treated him differently compared to everyone else.
However, his face soon filled with anger as he asked, “Did you kill all these villagers?”
“No. These young ones were the ones who killed them, but they only did it because I allowed it, so you can hold me accountable for this,” Wretched replied nonchalantly after a brief pause.
Jonathan took a deep breath. “Must you do this?”
“This is my second gift to Galad. That sly bast*rd deserves it.”
Jonathan fell speechless after hearing that.
“Come with me, Jonathan. You are my only friend, so I need to share my happiness with you,” Wretched said as it turned around and started walking toward the temple.
As Jonathan and Vananeru followed behind it, they couldn't help but wonder how these demonic beings were able to gather in a place of worship.
Upon arriving at the temple, Jonathan and Vananeru saw that the place was rather clean.
However, the statue of Fyeor had been reduced to a pile of rubble.
Wretched sat down on a throne that was specially made just for it.
There were ghosts in black all around them, each with a high level of cultivation. Their gazes were so intense that ordinary humans wouldn't dare make eye contact with them, but Jonathan was able to stare them all down.
“Father!” The silence was broken when Vananeru cried out all of a sudden.
