“I’m Angeline.”
The moment the officer heard that, his face turned grim before letting her pass through the cordoned-off area.
Once Angeline got in, she did not say much. Instead, she ran all the way up to the top floor.
After running up more than ten flights of stairs, Angeline held on to her knees and was panting heavily when she
reached her destination.
She forced herself to calm down before trying to comfort Darlene.
“Mrs. Quast, it’s me. Please calm down. Why don’t you come down first? Then, we can talk about your problems.”
The moment Darlene saw Angeline, her tears flowed uncontrollably, and she started yelling at Angeline, “You’re a
murderer! If it weren’t for the Sorelle family, my husband wouldn’t have ended up like this. Now that our savings
have been depleted, how do you expect us to carry on living?”
Angeline felt sad as she listened to Darlene’s complaint. She took a deep breath before saying, “I know you feel a
lot of hatred right now. I can pay for the medical fees—”
“You’re lying!”
Darlene was so agitated when she moved that the mud on the balcony started falling. It was a harrowing scene.
She pointed at Angeline and looked like she could not wait to kill her.
“All of you are just lying to me in front of the cameras. After that, no one will be held accountable. This time around,
I will never let this go!”
Angeline’s face darkened. Joseline must have lied to Darlene. That was why Darlene lost her confidence.
The existence of Joseline made Angeline realize that humans could be extremely nasty.
Angeline pursed her lips before bowing at Darlene apologetically.
“I know that you have suffered for many years. But, I’m not representing the Sorelle family when I apologize to you
and your family. As for Mr. Quast’s medical fees and his mental trauma compensation, I will pay the compensation
in full. However, I need to know the truth behind what happened all those years ago.”

“So what? My husband will never become a normal person again. If he were not threatened back then, he would
have never tampered with the car…”
Darlene was talking very softly. It was likely that the police standing nearby could not hear her, but Angeline heard
every word.
“What did you say?”
Her expression turned gloomy.
As for Darlene, she realized that she should not have said what she just did. In her state of panic, she trembled
violently and lost her footing. The very next moment, she fell off the top floor of the hospital.
Darlene’s scream pierced through the air.
“Mother!”
“Ah! Help!”
Following the resounding scream, Angeline was the first to react. She quickly reached out to grab Darlene’s hand.
Soon, Darlene’s body was swaying in midair. She cried out in fear, “Save me. Please save me.”
There was no way Angeline could withstand her weight. Angeline felt as if her arm was about to rip, and Darlene
was slipping away inch by inch.
Angeline gritted her teeth and used all her might to hang on to Darlene’s arm.
“Don’t give up! Make sure you hold tight.”
Tears were pouring down Darlene’s face in torrents that she could not even speak. She was close to passing out
from fright.
Angeline was in such pain that her face had turned pale, and her arm felt as heavy as lead. Her arm was on the
verge of giving way with every second that passed by.
Just as she could not hold on any longer, a group of police officers rushed up to help to pull Darlene to safety.
Angeline lost her balance and fell to the floor. It was as if all of her strength had been depleted. She stared into the
sky from fright and took a long while before she returned to her senses.
“Are you hurt?”
All of a sudden, she heard a deep, magnetic voice of a man.
Angeline was startled. Beads of water were falling from her fringe down to her eyes, obscuring her sight. She could,
however, still see that handsome face of Evander.
He held on tightly to her shoulders and asked anxiously, “Angeline, say something!”
Evander sounded like his usual self, but that did not frighten Angeline. Instead, she looked pitiful as she reached out
to hug him.
In that instant, time seemed to have stopped. It felt as if there was no one else in the world but the two of them.
Angeline burrowed into his embrace. The whiff of his scent calmed her down considerably.
“I was so scared…” she muttered like a child who wanted her sweets.
Evander frowned slightly and was heartbroken. He held on tightly to Angeline’s shoulders and asked in a deep voice,
“Can you stand up?”
“I think so.”
Angeline attempted to get up on her feet. However, she found herself floating in the air. It turned out that Evander
had carried her before walking down the stairs.
The sun shone on him and made him appear larger than usual.
Angeline was about to say something, but she stopped herself. She hooked her arms around Evander’s neck and
sneaked a peek at his expression before smiling to herself.
With Evander around to greet the police, no one dared to detain Angeline.
He drove both of them back to the lodging. After taking the elevator up and going back to their room, he placed her
on the couch.

swollen arm.
Looking at that gloomy face of his, Angeline hissed as she feigned feeling pain.
“Be gentle. It hurts.”
“So you do feel pain.”
Evander looked up at her and teased, “You were very brave just now when you saved the lady. Where has your
courage gone to?”
Angeline bowed her head in embarrassment.
“At the time, my mind went blank. You can’t expect me to sit back and watch a human being die.”
Now that she had recalled the incident, she was starting to feel fear.
They were on the tenth floor. If they had fallen, they would most certainly die on the spot.
Nonetheless, Angeline did not think too much back then. All she knew was that she could not let Darlene die.
Otherwise, the hard work that she had put into her investigation would be in vain.
Most importantly, if Delroy’s family is torn apart, how am I going to answer to my late parents?
“Angeline, listen carefully. From today onward, your life is no longer your own!”
After Evander finished applying the medicine, he stood up and placed a hand on the back of her head before
glaring at her in anger.
Angeline was taken aback by his reaction. “Mr. Golding, I don’t quite understand what you mean…”
“What I mean is, did the thought of your missing child and Floretta cross your mind when you nearly fell just now?”
When Angeline heard that, she was upset with herself. She bit her lip and said, “I know I was too impulsive just now
—”
“What about me?”
Angeline’s eyes widened in shock when she heard Evander’s last sentence. She glanced at his serious face, and he
looked as though he had lost his senses.
“Mr. Golding, don’t look so serious. You look like you are confessing to me.”
“I left my work to come all the way here to fetch you. Do you really think I’m that free?”
