Chapter 57 Chapter 57 Brooklyn As gunshots ring out all around us, Hudson grabsby the hand, pullingto the south side of the room. Aden is close behind us, providing cover.

There's a door there at the corner of the room with a terrace behind it, and I'm filled with relief when I see it.

But my hopes are dashed when a man jumps in our way.

He's wearing a ski mask. And aiming a weapon right at us.

There's no way it's not full of silver bullets. If he's here attacking, he knows damn well to be prepared for wolf shifters.

I stop short and start to pull Hudson back, when I hear a BANG at my ear and scream, clutching the side of my face.

The man in front of us falls and Hudson bolts forward, draggingwith him.

I turn to look behind at Aden and see a gun in his hand.

What the How the hell did he- "Go, Brooklyn!" Aden yells at me, the Alpha command heavy in his voice.

For a moment, I'm lost in his eyes, and a thought flashes through my mind. This can't be the last tI ever see him. I won't let it.

I hesitate.

"NOW!" Aden orders, his eyes on fire with his wolf.

I turn my attention back to Hudson, who reaches the door and pushes it open, pullingagainst the wall. Aden darts out, quickly scanning-then I hear more noise, see his finger pulse again as he shoots.

There are cries, thumps- I hardly have any tto process anything as Aden yells, "Clear!" and Hudson pullsthrough the door.

We run ahead of Aden then as he follows closely behind, watching our backs.

All of a sudden, I realize that there are bodies that we're stepping over. There's blood on the ground... One of the men on the ground moans, reaching for his gun, and I skitter away.

I'd always imagined that any type of altercation would be less...human? Humans need guns...wolves fight for themselves.

Panic is rocketing through me, so much that I can't think, can only act-can only follow Hudson wherever he's leading me.

We run to the end of the terrace and wait for Aden to pass us. He goes down the stairs first, expertly sweeping the area, firing efficiently at the threats he sees, regardless of if they are human or wolf shifter. I'm not sure if his weapon has silver bullets in it, but that doesn't really matter. A bullet will stop a shifter regardless.

Hudson looks anxiously behind us, but no one comes through the door.

"Clear!" Aden shouts, and we start down the stairs. "Fucking hurry, Hudson!" I almost stumble in my haste. When we get to the bottom there is a moment of quiet where we huddle together with Aden.

"Listen to me," Aden says, his eyes darting between us. "I don't know who ordered it, but this is a setup, targeted at us. They want one of us. Maybe all of us." His eyes shift to me. "Maybe just Brooklyn. So we have got to get out of here, fast." I feel my panic subside just a very little bit under Aden's expert command. I trust him to know what to do.

As crazy as it sounds, after everything we've been through, I trust him with my life.

Aden's eyes sweep over me, lighting on my stilettos.

"Get those fucking things off your feet," he says.

I hurry to pull them off, standing barefoot on the cement at the bottom of the stairs.

"We're going to make a run for it," he tells us, gesturing a hand out towards the golf course spreading out before us. "Across the greens, into the darkness. Head for the trees, shift, and then keep going. When I say go, you two run." He looks us in the eyes then. "Whatever you do. Don't. Look. Back." "But, what about you?" I ask.

"I have Alpha blood, Brooklyn. Don't forget that. I have the mind of a killer and the instincts of a wolf. I'll be okay." I start to tremble, and he steps close to me, taking my face sternly between his fingers.

"Do not fall apart onnow, Brooklyn," he growls. "Cry at hif you must. Never on the battlefield." I nod, working to pull myself together-and then he crouches down, ready to cover us as we go.

"One," he says, and Hudson and I crouch forward.

"Two," we get ready, and then there's a long pause...I almost look back, when suddenly... "THREE!" Hudson launches into an all-out sprint, my hand in his. I work hard to keep up, but he's faster, more athletic than me.

Still, I push myself, willing my legs to run as fast as I can.

It's not as fast as my wolf, but I know why Aden wants us to wait to shift until we are undercover of hitt trees.

Our Wolves are bigger, an easier target to hit. I hear the sound of gunshots ringing out behind us, of footsteps in the grass.

At spoint, something tugs on the back of my dress, but then it's gone.

When we reach the tree line, I look back and see that there's a body behindwhat tried to grab me.

Aden is about halfway behind us, running and squeezing off live fire as he goes at dark forms chasing him from the club.

Suddenly he stumbles, grabbing his arm.

"Hudson!" I shout, slowing, trying to turn back.

"Con, Brooklyn!" Hudson yells, gripping my hand harder and yankingforward. "But your dad!" "He told us to go! Shift and don't turn back!" The decision is made foras Hudson's hand pullsforward, locked around mine.

I allow my wolf through, and it only takes seconds to get my dress offi and shift into my wolf form. And then I'm running again. I follow Hudson, my breath coming fast and sharp in my chest, an ache rising in my muscles as I push, push.

The farther we run, the quieter it gets. We run through a small set of woods, across the soft green grass

of sgolfing greens. Even through that stands in and over a tiny creek that stands in wax as we our Set head towards another set of trees. This one larger, a group of pine trees. When we're under their boughs, I allow myself to collapse on the ground, tongue out and panting.
