Fredric was in mid-sentence when the door to the room swung open, and Jelena stepped out.
He hurried over. "I'm so sorry, Jelena. | swear | didn't mean to. | was just... out of my mind, totally lost it." Swallowing the humiliation and sorrow in her throat, Jelena stared at him unblinkingly. "Are you sure you can agree to anything | ask?" "Yes," Fredric replied without hesitation, nodding earnestly.

"You know I've been waiting for you. | wanted to divorce Sheryl and marry you three years ago, but you wouldn't have it. You quit your job and fled overseas. Sheryl's been dying for a son, but I've ensured she didn't get her way. | always hoped that my firstborn son would be with you." As he spoke, he pulled her into his embrace. "Jelena, you're my woman now. It might be fate. You were to return toeven if you ran away overseas. | promise I'll marry you. From now on, I'll treat you right." Jelena kept her head down and fell silent as if resigned to her fate.
Fredric lifted her in his arms and gently placed her on the couch. "Was | too rough last night? Did | hurt you?" Her eyes reddened again. "It was my first time, and it hurt like hell." He kissed her forehead tenderly, filled with remorse. "I'm sorry. Rest up these next few days. I'll cto see you every day." Aurelia stood to the side, completely petrified, and her world rocked.
Did Fredric refuse to give Sheryl a son because of Jelena? Did they have a secret affair? But she had sworn to Sheryl that there was nothing between Fredric and Jelena and that Jelena would never be the other woman.
Her cheeks felt ablaze as if slapped and swollen.
A moment later, Fredric left.
Aurelia's mind was a mess, a stampede of wild thoughts.

To avoid getting tangled up with him, | resigned and went abroad. But now, he’s taken my virginity, and | have to accept my fate." Aurelia felt faint. "The Stirling family has a protection mechanism for the first wife. He would not get a divorce if Sheryl didn't agree to it." Jelena grabbed her hand tightly. "Aren't you the matriarch of the Stirling family? We won't have to worry about Sheryl if you stand by me. Aurelia, you will stand by me, right?" Aurelia fell silent. She couldn't go back on her promise to Sheryl.
"Do you love Fredric?" asked Aurelia.
Jelena shrugged. "I'm traditional. He's taken my virginity. Like it or not, | belong to him now. Plus, | did the math. Yesterday was my ovulation day. | might get pregnant.” Aurelia gasped, having forgotten such a crucial factor.
"I'll go get you a morning-after pill right away. Take it, and everything will be fine." As she turned to leave, Jelena pulled her back. "No need. | don't want it. I'm ready to leave it to fate. If | got pregnant, it's fate, and I'm destined to marry Fredric." Aurelia was in total disarray.
Why was Jelena suddenly so conservative and traditional? She wasn't like this before.
"Fredric is a playboy, a heartbreaker, not someone you can entrust your life to. He might treat you well for a time, but sooner or later, he'll return to his old ways, and you'll end up like Sheryl." A sad smile appeared on Jelena's face as she replied, "It doesn't matter. If he seeks his pleasures outside, I'll stay hto be a good wife and mother. If we don't bother each other, that's fine."
