Chapter 201
Bailey nodded and said while wearing a faint smile, “I know. Choosing Artemis will mean selecting an
obstacle-filled path, which contradicts my initial intention. Please allow me some time to handle my
relationship with Artemis.”
Edmund gazed at her without saying a word. He remained silent for some time before uttering, “You
are a rational person, so I believe you will make the right decision. It's getting late now. You should go
up and get some rest. I need to go back too.”
She pursed her lips before sounding him out. “Old Mr. Chivers did not announce our marriage during
the banquet, right?”
A bitter smile spread across his face as he chuckled. “I managed to convince him not to. Bay, I would
never reveal any information about our marriage without receiving your consent.”
Bailey reached out to grab Edmund's hand and led him toward the parking lot. “Thank you very much.
You must be exhausted from taking care of Old Mr. Chivers all this while. Quickly go back and get
rested. Don't worry. This matter will significantly affect a few people's lives, so I will consider it
thoroughly and make an informed decision.”
“Okay.”
Bailey began focusing on researching new medications after Artemis helped her establish the required
connections with the pharmaceutical factory.
Half a month swiftly passed by. She obtained remarkable breakthroughs in the development of her
anticancer medication. However, she was still one step shy of success as she needed to wait for the
long process of clinical trials.
During that period, Bailey had visited the prison a few times. Whenever she spent some alone time with
Jessica, she would try using hypnosis to uncover the latter's deleted memories, but all her effort was in
vain.
Initially, Bailey wanted to invent a kind of medication that could stimulate the brain's nervous system to
aid Jessica in recollecting her lost memories. However, Bailey received a phone call from Eve.
Follow on NovᴇlEnglish.nᴇtEve said to Bailey, “Bailey, I heard about what happened to Jessica, and I also know that you are
providing her with treatments to try and recover her lost memories. I beg you. Please do not pursue this
matter further. I'm afraid Jessica will lose her life in the end. I'm worried that someone will do away with
her.”
After a thorough contemplation, Bailey agreed to Eve's plea.
Bailey was confident about dealing with Rhonda using other methods. She did not have to rely solely
on the dirt Jessica had on Rhonda.
“All right. I have to do you this favor since you so rarely asked something of me, Eve. Jessica is
imprisoned because of me, and I think she has been sufficiently punished after receiving the penalty
she deserved.”
“Thank you, Bailey. Remember to pay Master Gadzinski a visit when you're free.”
“Okay.”
Meanwhile, inside one of the Luther residence's bedrooms, Maxton was lying on his bed, talking on the
phone with Zayron.
“Idiot, I told you to investigate Rhonda previously, so what is your progress on the search? Is there an
affair between her and Cadence?”
Zayron's mocking laughter sounded from the phone's speaker. “How should I investigate if she has not
left the Luther residence in the past two weeks? You must have it rough having to pretend as a fool, but
it is such a pity that your effort is all for naught.”
The veins on Maxton's forehead throbbed as he clenched his jaw furiously.
“Zayron, you'd better pray we do not meet with one another. Otherwise, I'll show you the consequences
of making fun of me.”
Beep. Beep. Beep.
Listening to the beeping tone that indicated Zayron had hung up the call, Maxton's body shook with
fury.
He gritted his teeth, got down from the bed, and walked out of the room.
The two maids at the door hurriedly reached out to stop him when they saw Maxton leaving the room.
He hastily slipped through the gap between the maids and ran away.
“Mr. Maxton, where are you going? You are not allowed to leave the room.”
“Mr. Maxton, slow down. Careful not to trip.”
Maxton sprinted to the top of the staircase and coincidentally saw Felicity walking up the stairs. After
steeling his resolution, he deliberately tripped on his own foot.
I'm willing to endure this temporary pain now than drag this excruciating experience of having to
pretend as a fool further.
“Max!”
Felicity's hysterical cry rang from the top of the stairs.
She had just witnessed her precious grandson roll down the stairs and knock his head on the railing,
resulting in a bloody cut the size of a bottle cap on his head.
When Artemis and Bailey walked through the door and saw that scene, they exchanged glances.
Artemis laughed in exasperation. “What a stupid boy. Is his brain filled with sh*t? How could he come
up with such a ridiculous idea?”
Bailey was not as nonchalant as him. She hastened toward the bottom of the stairs and checked on
Maxton's injury.
Felicity acted as if she had seen her savior when she saw Bailey. She grabbed the latter's arm and
asked anxiously, “How is Max? Is he all right?”
Bailey said while wearing a frown, “There's a hole in his head. Do you think he's fine? Hurry up and
send him to the infirmary. His life may be in danger if we delay his treatment further.”
Colors drained from Felicity's face instantaneously. Her legs turned to jelly, and she slumped to the
ground.
Rhonda hurried over. When she saw Maxton lying in a pool of blood, she exclaimed gleefully in her
heart. Did he fall to his death? I think he's dead, right? If he's not dead, how should the baby I'm
carrying replace him as the family's heir?
“Max, Max. W-What happened to you? What's going on?”
Rhonda stretched out her hand in an attempt to hug Maxton as she wailed. She was planning on
aggravating Maxton's existing wound in the hope of ending the boy's life.

However, just as her fingertip touched his shoulder, someone grasped her wrist.
“He will die faster if you lay a finger on him. Are you that desperate to see your son die, Rhonda?”
Rhonda was shocked as her face turned pale in an instant. Then, she glared at Bailey and chided,
“Don't try to slander others. I gave birth to Max, so why would I want him dead?”
Felicity bellowed at them, “That's enough! Don't you see Max's life is hanging in the balance now?
Hurry up and send him to the infirmary!”
Rhonda and Bailey fell silent afterward.
Inside the emergency room, Artemis crossed his arms in front of his chest and leaned lazily against the
wall beside a machine. He gazed down at Maxton and snorted. “Did you have to risk your life to cover
up a lie you told me? How very brave of you.”
Maxton reached out to rub his head in dizziness and pouted. “You knew I was pretending to be a fool,
yet you did not expose me. Did you find it amusing seeing your son embarrassed?”
Artemis sneered. “You were toyed around by that brat, Zayron, because of your inadequacy. Do you
think you're qualified to blame me for remaining an onlooker?”
Maxton was rendered speechless. I can't believe my biological father is uttering these words!
Outside the emergency room, Bailey swept her eyes across every member of the Luther family before
finally resting her gaze on Rhonda's face.
“You are very fortunate, Ms. Rhonda. Your son managed to survive this predicament.”
A hint of disappointment flashed across Rhonda's eyes, but she feigned a joyful appearance. “Really?
Max is safe?”
Bailey regarded her with a half-smile and added, “Not only is he fine, but he also reverted to normal
following the blow to his head.”
The cheerful expression on Rhonda's face stiffened. She fell into a momentary daze and blurted, “Did
he not become a fool? How is it possible that he recovered? Did you make a mistake?”
A few people turned to look in her direction simultaneously.
Only then did Rhonda realize she had let slip her genuine thoughts.
“I-I did not mean that. I-I am just too happy, so I wasn't thinking properly. Has Max truly returned to
normal?”
Bailey scoffed inwardly. She was finally certain of Rhonda's wish to cause Maxton's death.
