Chapter 244 Hearing Aaron's oh-so-obvious denial, Serena couldn't help but laugh even harder.
"Aaron, this is Northspire, not Alderburg. You don't get to make the rules here!" she shot back.
She had been a little disheartened when she realized Abby had lied to her, but now that Aaron was trying to control things, she was more determined than ever to win first place.
Aaron watched Serena, stubborn as ever, and his brow furrowed. "Do you always have to contradict me?" "Who's contradicting whom?" Serena's voice was icy. "I wanted a life with you, but you couldn't see past Cynthia Lynwood. Now that I've finally let you go, you won't leavealone. Aaron, don't you think this is a little pathetic?" Aaron's scowl deepened. He rubbed his forehead, then looked up at Serena, enunciating each word: "You really won't drop out of the competition?" "No, I won't." "Fine." Aaron stood up, his gaze steely. "Don't say I didn't warn you." With that, he swept out of the room.
Serena watched him go, her smile dropping the moment the door closed behind him.
That was Aaron for you. He claimed he didn't care about Cynthia Lynwood, yet here he was, trying to push Serena out of the competition for Cynthia's sake.

Serena gathered her things and headed home.
As she reached the entrance to her apartment complex, she spotted a sleek Lamborghini parked outside. Her mood instantly lifted.
She walked up and tapped on the window.
It slid down to reveal William's handsface.
A smile tugged at Serena's lips. "You're here early." "Wrapped up work and cright over. You're back sooner than I thought. Hop in." "Mm-hmm." Serena opened the door and climbed in.
"The trial's in a few days. Are you nervous?" William asked as she settled in. Serena shook her head. "Not really." Giles had been in good spirits these past few days, and she'd looked over his previous case files. Aside from that one loss to Nestor Leighton, his record was spotless.
William smiled faintly. "Let's get going." From the front seat, Finn responded with a quick "Yes, sir." He'd long since given up saying anything about William cutting meetings short to pick up Miss Sullivan.
Mr. William was definitely in love with her. Not that Miss Sullivan seemed interested in romance, judging by her demeanor.
The three of them arrived at Giles's house.
With the trial just around the corner, Giles was determined to leave nothing to chance. He'd called William and Serena over to run a mock trial.
"There are always a million things that can go wrong in court, so we can't get complacent," Giles said, handing them each a thick stack of papers. "Remember, on the stand, you can't afford a single mistake." Serena, who hadn't been nervous before, suddenly felt her anxiety spike at Giles's words.
"Um... I'm going to use the restroom real quick," she mumbled, slipping out of the study and into the bathroom.

Standing in front of the sink, she stared at her reflection. Just thinking about the possibility of failure made of her skin crawl, like ants were crawling all over her. That anxiety followed her back into the mock trial, making her fumble repeatedly.
Giles finally lost patience. "Alright, that's enough. Let's take a break."
Serena glanced at him, uneasy, wanting to say something, but m William caught her wrist before she could speak. He shook his head gently and mouthed, "Cwith me." Confused, Serena followed him out to the backyard.
"Close your eyes," William said softly.
Serena frowned. "Why?" "Just trust me. Close your eyes. You'll see."
She hesitated, then did as he asked.
The next second, ske felt something gently into her palm.
