| truthfully informed Brennan of my plan, and he let out a cold laugh.

“Marlene, did you think that this would be enough to repayfor my kindness towards you? But it’s far from

enough, | want you to be by my side forever!”

“I disagreed with your leaving without my permission, you could only stay by my side. Today, you had to go with

me!”

He approached again, wanting to hug me, but | pushed him away.

“I have already said it before, when | was young and foolish, | thought I had fallen in love with you. And you used

to dislikebothering you all the time, right? Now | won't bother you anymore, so please don’t cand

bothereither, okay, Uncle?”

Brennan smiled and then burst into tears, sobbing uncontrollably. “You say you don’t loveanymore? What am

| supposed to do? | have already fallen in love with you, | simply cannot be without you! Just the thought of you

leaving my side makesfeel unbearable pain!”

“Marlene, | know | hurt your heart before, that’s why you don’t want to loveanymore. | won't force you to fall

in love withagain right away, just cback with me. After we go back, we can slowly cultivate our feelings,

| refused him again and said sincerely, “Uncle, you just couldnt acceptleaving you, couldn't accept me

breaking free from your control. This is not love, true love is not like this.”

“You should leave here soon and never cto findagain. In the future, | will cback to see you. You

have raisedfor so many years, you have long been my family.”

But Brennan refused to leave, and just as he was draggingaway like a madman, our senior brother, who

heard the commotion, quickly cover to help.

Brennan rushed all the way, but he was no match for the young senior brother. He was immediately knocked

down to the ground.

He sat down on the ground, looking atcoldly and said, “Marlene, you've grown! Just a few days after leaving

me, you already have another man! Did you cto this mountain because of him? Is it because of him that you

don’t want to go back with me?”

“Do you believe that | could make him lose his education and future career, leaving him with no place to stand in

this city?”

My senior brother heard him insultingand was so angry that he was about to go forward and hit him, but |

stopped him.

“Brennan, could you be any more shameless! Just because | didn’t go back with you, you threatened the people

around me?”

“Yes, as long as you obediently cback with me, | promise not to harm him! Otherwise, | will make you regret

your choice today!”

| was so angry that tears streamed down my face. My senior brother quickly comforted me, saying, “Marlene,

don’t cry. It’s not worth crying for someone like him! I am your senior brother, and it's my duty to protect you!

Besides, | wasn't scared at all!”

Brennan's face darkened even more when he saw this, and a few words squeezed out from between his teeth,

“Marlene, are you sure you won't cback with me?”

This time, | looked at him firmly and said, “I will not go back with you, and | am not afraid of your threats. If you

don’t leave, | will call the police!”

Brennan's disdainful expression seemed to be tellingthat calling the police would be useless. With his family

background and status, he simply wouldn't be afraid.

| reported to the police in front of him and then said to him, “Brennan, you thought the police couldn't do

anything to you, right?”

“But our research project was confidential. You followed my senior brother all the way to our base. Do you know

what this means?”

“Now, do you still think the police couldn't do anything to you?”

| turned around and reported the matter to my mentor. The mentor instructed a few senior colleagues to restrain

Brennan and wait for the arrival of the police.

He only realized the seriousness of the problem then and suggested that | talk to him.

But | didn’t want to say a word to him anymore, not until the police car arrived and | handed him over to the

police. | didn’t speak to him again.

In the following days, | remained busy.

It had been half a year since | last saw Brennan, and the investigation project progressed much faster than

expected, finishing a whole three months ahead of schedule.

| had just arrived on campus when | received the wedding invitation from Brennan.

He did not marry Brittany, but instead followed his family’s advice and married a wealthy girl from

a respectable family.

| thought about it, but | didn’t attend his wedding. | just gave him a call to congratulate him, saying,

“Uncle, congratulations.”

There was a pause on the other end of the phone, and Brennan's desolate voice finally cthrough, “That

person isn’t you, so it doesn’t matter who it is. My family is pressuringinto an arranged marriage again, and |

agreed.”

“Marlene, is there really no possibility for us anymore? If you're willing, | can give up the engagement and

everything right now! I'm willing to give up anything as long as | can be with you!”

| sighed, “Uncle, it’s not possible between us anymore. From now on, you are just my uncle.”

He choked on the phone and said, “It waswho lost a pure girl who loved me, it was my own fault. But

Marlene, ever since you entered my heart, | can’t love anyone else anymore, what should | do?”

But I simply replied faintly, “Uncle, | wish you and your wife a hundred years of happiness together and may you

have many noble children.”

| hung up the phone right after | finished speaking.

Later, | heard that his wedding ceremony was postponed for an hour before it was held. He kept looking outside

the hall door, as if waiting for someone.

But that person never showed up in the end.

One year later, | successfully passed the entrance examination for my mentor’s graduate program and officially

joined the team.

Not long after, | heard that Brennan beca father and took on a new role in life.

All the things will eventually pass, and a brand-new future is right in front of us.

In this lifetime, | wanted to live as an amazing version of myself.
