"I'm done with this game," Beverley waved dismissively, noticing William hadn't emerged yet, she called out again, "William, come
on out already."
From the room next to the storage closet, a little boy scampered out, "Why'd we stop? | hid so well, and you guys couldn't find me."
Beverley ruffled his hair, making sure he was flesh and blood, not a ghost before she could relax.
She had been worried, scared stiff that he had been possessed by srestless spirit.
"Where's Mira?"
"I'm over here," Mira appeared, clutching a slice of cheesecake, "I got hungry and went to grab something to eat."
Beverley turned up all the lights until the area was lit up like broad daylight. Her eyes swept the corridor, her heart still pounding
as the image of the little boy's eerie, unsettling smile, straight out of a horror movie, flashed in her mind.
"Everyone, head to my room. I've got something to tell you."
She beckoned the children to her room downstairs, where they all gathered, sitting in a circle on a plush woolen rug.

Beverley got herself a glass of water and gulped it down, attempting to calm her nerves.
"What is it, Beverley?" William asked.
Lowering her voice, Beverley confessed, "I think | saw a ghost in the storage room earlier."
"A ghost?" The kids looked at each other in disbelief.
Skyler stuck out his tongue, "There's no way. Ghosts at Mossy Rock Retreat? Yeah right."
"I'm serious. It was a little spook, hiding behind the curtains, drawing circles on the ground. He looked just like Kane and then he
smiled at me, and it was so creepy, and it sent shivers down my spine."
At this, Mira, already scared, dropped her cheesecake, covering her eyes, "A ghost, oh no, we've got a ghost. | saw it too."
Beverley jolted, "Mira, you saw it too?"
Mira nodded vigorously, "Yes. He looked just like Kane, behindone second and gone the next. I'm terrified."
She hugged herself, trembling.
Nina also froze in fear, constantly glancing at Kane beside her as if he wasn't really a boy but a spectral imposter.
Kane, sensing Nina's apprehension, said in a deliberate tone, "Nina, don't stare atlike that. I'm not a ghost. See, I've got feet,
and | cast a shadow too."
Skyler caught on to what was happening, covered his mouth to stifle a laugh, and then put on a frightened facade.
"Beverley, Mira, you guys sure you weren't seeing things?"
"If one person was, maybe, but both of us?" Beverley insisted, now thoroughly convinced they had encountered a ghost.
Mira was beside herself with fear, curled up tight, clutching at Beverley's clothes, "Beverley, I'm scared. What if the ghost comes
for us at night?"
Beverley wrapped her arm around Mira's quivering shoulders, her gaze scanning the others, "Did none of you see anything?"
"Nope," Nina shook her head, visibly scared now.

Nova, clueless about what was going on, sat on the rug, eyes wide, looking from one person to the next, echoing, "Ghost, ghost,
ghost."
Mira added, "Nova saw it too. The ghost appeared when she was with me."
"But isn't it said that only kids under three can see ghosts? We're all big kids here, only Nova's little. She should be the only one
able to see ghosts," Nina reasoned.
"Maybe it's because Nova was there that the ghost showed up," Beverley hypothesized.
"Why would the ghost want to look like Kane?" Nina was full of questions.
"Maybe it's because Kane is the heir apparent," proposed Beverley.
Skyler chimed in, "Has anything scary related to children ever happened at Mossy Rock Retreat?"
"Well, Mossy Rock Retreat has been around for over a century, renovated several times. Who knows, maybe something unsavory
happened back in the old days. | heard old tales about the original master of the house having a slew of mistresses, always at each
other's throats."
