Chapter 661 A Blood Feud

“Caridee...”

Simon shoved Veikko away with all his might and threatened him through gritted teeth, “If anything happens to my

sister, I'll make sure you pay dearly.”

After saying that, he went after Caridee.

As Veikko gazed at the slender figure running through the snowstorm, his eyes darkened.

I shouldn't have come into her life from the start.

He reckoned that a cheery and bubbly girl like her should not get entangled with someone as undeserving as

himself, for he was carrying more than just his dark side on his shoulders.

It was then that Bailey paced over and scrutinized the young lady standing next to Veikko.

Startled, the young lady got down on one knee and inclined her head a fraction. “Ms. Jefferson! I... I didn't seduce

Veikko. No, I mean... There's nothing going on between us. It was him—”

Bailey waved her hand and said placidly, “You can leave now. I need to have a chat with Veikko.”

The female special agent moved aside in a hurry.

Narrowing her eyes, Bailey pinned her gaze on the man in front of her and went on in a deep voice, “Caridee was

overjoyed while expecting you. You really shouldn't have forced her to give up on you like that. It's way too cruel.”

Veikko shot her a gaze as cold as the winter and replied casually, “She's your sister-in-law, Bailey, so it's completely

understandable that you wish for her happiness. But please don't build your hope on my character. This has always

been the way I deal with any woman who's fallen for me—cut the Gordian knot and boot them out of my life.”

Perhaps it was the will of the heavens that Veikko would never be privileged to build a happy family like an ordinary

man, given his background and the burden on his shoulders. Letting go of his heart's desire appeared to be the only

answer.

Bailey secretly heaved a sigh before she probed cautiously, “Do you really have no feelings for Caridee? If you don't

have a thing for her and don't care about her, why would you mobilize all your forces just to seek out any

acclaimed doctor who could have a chance at curing her arm?”

“She got hurt because of me, so it's only natural for me to do my part. I'd rather not owe her any favor. I'm sorry if

you guys end up getting the wrong idea because of that. Now that I've cleared things up, it's about time that you

cease your wishful thinking.”

Bailey shook her head. She stared straight into the man's eyes and said, “Stop deceiving yourself, you little brat. A

positive, optimistic girl like her is like a ray of light in your life, and you're telling me that you have no feelings for

her? If my guess is correct, you must be trying to protect her from harm, which is why you're pushing her away.”

Veikko turned away with his back facing Bailey and refuted, “Don't forget the blood feud running in my veins, Bailey.

An inevitable battle of life and death with that d*mn mutt is waiting for me. Death will be imminent if I lose, and

even if I win, it'll cost me my reputation for killing one of my own. There will never be a happy ending for me and

those who follow me.”

Bailey froze momentarily at those words as the images from that fateful night with a heavy downpour popped right

back into her head.

A young man soaked in blood was lying flat on the ice-cold ground, surrounded and beaten up by dozens of burly

men.

Even under such dire circumstances, she managed to obliterate that group of professional hitmen and rescue that

poor man who was almost trampled to death.

All those years, Veikko had been bearing the thirst for vengeance in his heart.

As of then, he had finally gathered enough power to realize his master plan and settle the score once and for all.

His journey, however, was bound to be tumultuous, one that would be blanketed with thorns, considering that he

would be putting his own brother to the sword.

Indeed, Veikko only had Caridee's best interest at heart when he chose to end things with her that way.

Only time would tell if destiny would bring them back together again.

“When everything comes to an end, maybe you two can—”

Raising his hand, Veikko hushed Bailey then and there and stated frostily, “My whole life's been intertwined with

blood and gore, whereas she's been living a simple life. We've always been people from two different worlds. If you

insist on matchmaking us, you'll only be ruining her life in the end.”

Not another word escaped Bailey. All she did was hang her head low.

He does have a point, I guess. No one can tell what the future holds.

Veikko's decision to sever all ties with Caridee was the most rational at that point. Abandoning all notions they had

for each other might be their only way out of the looming heartbreak in the future.

Bailey eventually realized that she was in no position to press him further.

Meanwhile, at the Jefferson residence, Rhonda was sitting by the bay window in her bedroom, listening to a report

on the phone.

To hear that Shirley had botched the mission, Rhonda did not even bat an eyelash.

After all, she would not have gotten herself into such a miserable state had Bailey been that easy to deal with.

Joining forces with Shirley was purely a trick of hers to take a dig at Bailey and at the same time drag Shirley down

with her.

In fact, it would be too lonesome for Rhonda should she be the only one to fall from grace. With more victims

suffering the same as her, she would at least feel better if she failed to bring Bailey down in the end.

You're up next, Zoey!

Rhonda had her heart set on leading Zoey to the bitter end, one that was more tragic than hers.

“Follow through with our plan and sort out all the known information. Look for an opening and disclose them all to

the Shurmers. I want her out of the Shurmer family.”

“I'm on it.”

Still out running in the snow was Caridee. As chance would have it, she slipped and crashed onto the ground. Her

arm which had already shown signs of recovery was dealt another crushing blow.

Eventually, she wound up in the ward.

It was Bailey who helped Caridee to put her arm in a cast. Part of her bone at the wound was already visible to the

naked eye. Yet, as Bailey poured some medicinal powder on her wound, Caridee remained deadpan and did not

even draw her brows together.

It seemed that she had truly fallen head over heels for Veikko, to the extent that she could feel no pain other than

the pang of unrequited love from within.

“How's she? Is her arm going to be okay?” asked the overwrought Felicity.

Bailey sighed and shook her head in return. “It all depends on her willingness to cooperate with the treatment. If

she decides to give up on it herself, there's nothing we can do to help.”

Felicity wished to talk some sense into Caridee but was quickly stopped by Bailey.

“She's all caught up in her own world right now. I don't think any of your advice will get through her. Haste makes

waste. Let's give her some time.”

Felicity nodded at that. “Very well, then. By the way, what's up with that brat? Even if he wasn't fond of my

daughter, he shouldn't have brought another woman over just to upset her. Why couldn't he at least be tactful in

turning her down? Must he really resort to such an aggressive method?”

“Well, maybe he thought that was the fastest way possible to settle things. If he genuinely has no interest in

Caridee, his resolution may be for the best.”

Felicity sighed multiple times before saying, “I understand his concerns. He's always in and out of all sorts of bloody

messes, and the last thing he wants is to implicate Caridee. By that logic, I shouldn't blame him since he's doing it

for my daughter's own good. Even so, the way he handles it is way too extreme.”

Right then, the door to the ward was flung open. It was Zeke. Instead of stepping inside, he looked at Bailey and

uttered, “A word with you.”

Bailey inclined her head and left Felicity a couple of reminders before exiting the ward.

In the corridor, Zeke passed the phone over to Bailey and asked, “Is this one of the Hoffmans' numbers?”

She glanced at the screen and bobbed her head. “Yes, it's Juliana's. Did she call? What did she—”

No, that doesn't make sense. If they had spoken, he wouldn't have asked me whether that number belongs to the

Hoffmans.

“Hurry and call her back. She must have something urgent to talk to you about.”
