Chapter 449
Zoey knew she could not count on the Shurmer family.
The paternity test incident had aroused the Shurmer's suspicion.
Though the truth was not out there yet, the Shurmer family would realize something was amiss if she
continued taking revenge against Bailey.
That was why Zoey wanted to use Sofie to her advantage since the latter was now on her side. Who
cares about kinship? It's all about fighting for our interests. I would have kicked her to the curb had she
not been able to lend me a hand.
Besides Waverly, Zoey would never acknowledge anyone else as her mother. The only reason she
buttered Sofie up was she wanted the woman's help to get Bailey out of her way. She abandoned me
when I was born, so I'll never acknowledge her as my mother.
Meanwhile, Bailey conducted a routine body checkup on Glen at the Chivers residence.
Artemis was with them at the infirmary.
When Yoel saw Bailey putting away the scanning device, he immediately asked, “How is it? Did the
cancer cells spread? Some experts said cancer recurrence might happen sometime after the tumor
surgery.”
Bailey responded with a faint grin, “Old Mr. Chivers' tumor is non-malignant, so a cancer recurrence is

updated if something happens.”
Yoel heaved a sigh of relief. “Thank God. I was worried that the cancer cells might return and grow into
malignant tumors. Old Mr. Chivers is so frail now. I'm sure he can't go through the whole process all
over again.”
“That won't happen, trust me,” Bailey assured him.
She then looked in Glen's direction and smiled. “Old Mr. Chivers, you must tell me if you feel
uncomfortable. Our immune system weakens as we age, so I'm concerned that your body might not
respond well to the treatment.”
Glen waved his hand. He glanced at her belly, but words caught in his throat when he noticed Artemis
was around. “Go and have a chat with Eddy's mom. I wish to speak to Artemis in private.”
Bailey smiled in response and hesitated for a moment before leaving. The fact that Mrs. Chivers didn't
show up means she must still be mad and thus felt awkward meeting me.
She knew Gwendolyn liked her very much and hoped she would become her daughter-in-law, but... To
be honest, I don't know what to say to her when I see her.
Yoel seemed to have seen right through Bailey and said flatly, “My wife had just returned from an
auction after bidding on an antique emerald ring. She has been admiring the beauty of the jewelry
piece the whole day, and that's why she's not here to meet you. I hope you can be a little more
understanding and continue to respect her as your elder. After all, though she isn't going to be your
mother-in-law, she's still your aunt-in-law,” he added.
Upon hearing that, Bailey felt much better. “You're right. I do respect her as my elder. I'll have to make
the first move and initiate the conversation with her. You guys carry on. I'll go and check on her.”
After shoving Artemis aside, she walked out of the door.
“Be careful. Don't say anything that will backfire on you,” Artemis reminded her.
Bailey replied, “Got it. You stay here to keep Granddad company.”
Meanwhile, Gwendolyn was studying her antique emerald ring with a magnifying glass in the living hall.
The butler could not help but ask, “Mrs. Chivers, Ms. Jefferson is here. Are you sure you don't want to
meet her?”
Gwendolyn's hand jolted for a bit while holding the magnifying glass. After regaining her composure,
she responded nonchalantly, “She's the kind of girl who tends to overthink, so she might feel awkward if
I appear before her. She must have felt guilty and is too ashamed to see me. Why should I put her in a
difficult position?”
The butler gave her a wry smile. “You have her best interest at heart. But what if she doesn't
understand why you're doing this? What if she misunderstands you, thinking you're giving her attitude?”
Gwendolyn waved her hand. “Things don't always go according to plan. How can we expect everything
to be perfect? There's nothing much I can do if Eddy and she are not meant to be together. No one can

There was a flash of worry in her eyes when she mentioned her son.
Two days ago, Edmund even mooted the idea of adopting a child from one of the branches of the
family.
She knew what he had in mind. He's probably planning to live in solitude. He doesn't want to marry
anymore, does he? Does he really want to spend the rest of his life alone?
Gwendolyn could only sigh helplessly.
The butler's eyes darted from side to side for a moment as he tried to come up with words of
consolation. He then smiled and said, “Lydia from the Xanthos family seems like a girl with a bubbly
personality, and she has been trying to get Mr. Chivers' attention. Perhaps, given time and luck, he
might fall in love with her?”
Gwendolyn gave the butler a half-hearted smile that didn't reach his eyes. “I hope so. I like Lydia too. I
hope she'll one day win Eddy's heart.”
Suddenly, footsteps emerged from outside the door.
The butler could not help but quip, “Speak of the devil. I can easily recognize her footsteps after
hearing them in the last couple of days.”
A young lady in a pink princess dress dashed across the living hall. “I'm back, Mrs. Chivers.”
Gwendolyn straightened her back and turned her attention to the girl standing by the door. She grinned
and asked, “You're back? I thought you went to the office to ask Edmund to buy you lunch?”
“He has a lunch appointment. I came home because I was bored. Oh wow, Mrs. Chivers, this emerald
ring looks exquisite!”
