Chapter 1584
The next day, at the James Building.
Emily clocked in on time. As the elevator doors slid open, Charlie stood inside.
His face was as usual, only his gaze towards her was noticeably cold.
Once she stepped into the elevator, Emily positioned herself as far away from him as possible.
Neither of them spoke. The atmosphere in the lift was icy, as if it could freeze one’s breath.
The elevator stopped at the 39th floor. Emily stepped aside, slightly lowering her head, respectfully waiting for
Charlie to exit first. Charlie’s gaze swept over her as he strode out.
Emily held her breath unconsciously, letting it out only when he was well out of sight.
Once at work, Emily was busy all day, making a report to Charlie about the day’s schedule in between.
Gavin was in Charlie’s office when Emily walked in. As usual, he greeted her with a smile, “Good morning, Ms.
Follow on NovᴇlEnglish.nᴇtEmily.”
Emily returned his greeting with a faint smile, “Good morning, Mr. Gavin.”
“By the way,” Gavin laughed, “Someone sent me a set of women’s cosmetics and delivered it to the company. I
don’t have a girlfriend, so I thought I’d have someone bring it up for you later.”
Emily was going to decline, but changed her mind and accepted, “Thank you, I’ll treat you to a meal.”
“Sounds good!” Gavin said with a smile.
Charlie looked up at the two of them, his gaze indifferent. He remained silent.
Emily finished her report and left. Gavin watched her retreating figure, chuckling, “Ms. Emily seems to be in a good
mood today.”
Charlie’s expression was somber. He looked up and said flatly, “Please behave professionally at work.”
Gavin was taken aback, “I’ve always talked to her like this. Why are you suddenly so uptight?”
“Stop joking around with her so much,” Charlie said, his face expressionless.
Gavin raised an eyebrow, sensing that something was off with Charlie, “You seem cranky this morning. Didn’t you
get enough sleep last night?” Charlie had had too much to drink the night before. He was feeling hungover and
unsettled, not in the mood for Gavin’s banter. He took a big gulp of his coffee and began discussing business
matters.
Around noon, Emily received a message from Charlie, [I won’t be going out for lunch. Make something for me.]
Emily quickly replied, [Sorry, Mr. James. I have a lunch meeting with the bank. Afraid I won’t have time to cook.]
She put down her phone and waited for a while but Charlie didn’t reply, so she went back to work.
After work, Tracy left in a hurry for a date.
Emily wasn’t in a rush. She waited for Charlie to leave before getting up.
In the afternoon, Gavin went upstairs to continue the morning’s discussion. Seeing Charlie’s poor complexion, he
asked, “Still not feeling well?”
Charlie massaged his forehead, “I’m’fine.”
Follow on Novᴇl-Onlinᴇ.cᴏmGavin handed Charlie a mint, “Here, have a mint. It might help.”
Charlie glanced at it and asked, “Where’d you get it?”
“Emily gave it to me,” Gavin laughed, “I ran into her in the cafeteria at lunch. We sat together. I told her I’ve been
sick and can’t taste anything, so she gave me a mint.”
He joked, “I couldn’t bring myself to eat the sweet Emily gave me, so I’m giving it to you.”
Charlie frowned, “You saw her in the cafeteria at lunch? When exactly?”
Gavin thought for a moment, “Around half past twelve.”
Charlie’s face darkened. Emily hadn’t had a lunch date, she was deliberately avoiding him!
Now, she didn’t even want to prepare meals for him!
His head was already throbbing and now it was unbearable. He slammed his hand on the desk, his voice icy, “Call
her to my office!”
Gavin asked in confusion, “What happened? Did Emily do something wrong, or did I say something wrong?”
“It’s none of your business. Just tell her I want to see her!” Charlie bit his lip.
Gavin’s eyes flickered for a moment, then he got up to fetch Emily.
