Avery hated the smell of disinfectant in the hospital. As she had a fever, she couldn't help but recall the memories

from many years ago. She tugged at Cayden's sleeve lightly and mumbled, “I don't want to see a doctor.”

Cayden was already anxious about her condition in the first place. Upon hearing her childish words, he grew even

more frustrated.

He tightened his arms around her and put on a stern face, chiding, “Behave yourself. You have a high fever. What if

it damages your brain?”

In return, Avery only glanced at him weakly.

Thinking that she was just throwing a tantrum, Cayden leaned down and gave her a peck. It was as if he was

placating a child.

As usual, the hospital's emergency department on the first floor was packed.

When the people in line saw Cayden cutting in front of them, they were naturally disgruntled. A cranky man even

raised his voice at Cayden and berated the latter for having no manners.

The clamor in the emergency room soon caught the doctor's attention. With a frown, he pushed his glasses back

and signaled the nurse beside him to organize the line.

The moment the nurse saw Cayden, her eyes lit up. Wow, what a good-looking man he is!

The nurse walked up to him, but just as she was about to speak, she was startled by his dark expression.

Instantly, she took a few steps away from him and looked at the busy doctor for help.

This man seems to be hot-tempered.

Irritated, the doctor turned to Cayden and threw his pen to the side. “What are you doing? Don't you see how many

patients there are in the emergency room? Go back there and line up!”

“Stop the nonsense. She has a fever. Hurry and treat her.” After saying that, Cayden placed Avery down on a chair.

Only then did the doctor take some time to scrutinize the man before him. Not only was Cayden dressed

expensively, but he also gave off an unusual aura. For some reason, the doctor felt like he had seen Cayden's face

before in a financial magazine.

As a middle-aged man familiar with the ways of the world, the doctor knew he could not afford to offend such a

man.

Cayden had never been to the emergency room. In fact, he seldom visited hospitals, so he was unaware that they

had to line up in the emergency room. Before this, he had always had the doctor visit him whenever he was sick.

At the sight of Cayden's “vicious” appearance, the other patients in the emergency room dared not argue with him

anymore.

Left with no choice, the doctor told the nurse, “Take her temperature first.”

The nurse then picked up a thermometer and approached Avery.

Before she could even touch the latter, the thermometer in her hand was snatched away by Cayden. “Let me do

it.”

He was so possessive that he did not want other people—even women—to touch Avery.

After carefully helping Avery take her temperature with the thermometer, Cayden removed his coat and put it on

her.

Although she was already wearing a thick down jacket, he was still worried that she would be cold.

As the nurse watched Cayden take care of Avery so meticulously, envy was evident on her face.

Indeed, good-looking men are the most responsible ones. It's the ugly guys who always cheat!

She remembered seeing an interesting survey on the internet before, which concluded that the more handsome a

man was, the lower the possibility of him cheating. On the contrary, men with below-average looks were most likely

to cheat despite the fact that they looked more trustworthy.

In fact, there were living examples of this phenomenon in the entertainment industry. Among the industry's most

ideal husbands were an award-winning actor, a renowned director and actor, and a popular idol. Not only were they

good-looking, but they were also loyal and loving toward their wives.

Meanwhile, the ones who were found cheating on their partners were generally the less attractive ones. One

particular director was even discovered fooling around with prostitutes when he had a gorgeous wife at home.

Thus, when the nurse witnessed Cayden cherishing his partner so well, she felt even more determined to find a

handsome boyfriend in the future.

However, upon seeing how Avery showed no appreciation for Cayden's actions and even avoided his touch, she

couldn't help but feel bad for him. It seems like his girlfriend is quite spoiled. Why is it that cute guys always have

girlfriends with terrible personalities?

As the nurse was immersed in her thoughts, Cayden's grim voice sounded. “Thirty-nine point nine degrees? Her

fever is too high! Doctor, put her on an IV drip.”

The doctor immediately prescribed Avery some medicine while the nurse prepared the drip. Then, she rolled

Avery's sleeve up and disinfected the back of the latter's hand.

When the nurse was about to insert the needle, Avery started to tremble violently at the sight of the thin needle.

Her behavior startled the nurse, who immediately assumed she was scared of injections. “Miss, it won't hurt,” the

nurse reassured.

However, Avery shot up from the chair as if she had seen something terrifying.

She flung off the nurse's hand and ran toward the exit desperately.

Suddenly, she tripped on something and twisted her ankle. Before her body could hit the ground, a pair of toned

arms caught her by the waist in time.

Cayden's angry voice rang beside her ear. “Avery, stop it!”

“I don't want an injection. Let me go. Let me go!” Avery sobbed as she struggled with all her might, but she couldn't

move in Cayden's tight hold.

In the end, she could only whimper, “Cayden, I don't want an injection. I don't want it...”

No one knew how terrified Avery was of needles. It was her darkest nightmare.

Henrietta and Milana had tortured her in various ways back then; it had been a part of her daily life. Worried that

Leonardo would see Avery's injuries, Henrietta and Milana even came up with an evil idea. They began to torture

Avery by pricking her all over with long needles.

Unfortunately, Avery was malnourished back then. There was no way she could have defended herself against

Henrietta with her weak body.

The experience was excruciating for her. The tiny wounds that covered her body were almost invisible, and they

disappeared quickly. Whenever she complained to her father, she would be called an overreacting and

unreasonable brat who wouldn't accept her stepmother.

It was only when she attended a boarding school that she was able to escape that atrocity. Nevertheless, it still left

her with deep trauma and a phobia of needles.

The medical staff and patients in the emergency room exchanged glances as they did not understand why Avery

was so scared.

They stood aside and glanced at Cayden, whose face was as black as thunder. Not daring to look at him for long,

they instead whispered among themselves.

Meanwhile, Avery looked like she was about to break down. Her smooth hair was now disheveled as she tried to pry

away Cayden's hands around her waist.

“Please, I beg you. Don't make them give me an injection!” she pleaded.

By then, Cayden was running out of patience.

He forcefully brought her to the doctor's table and pushed her toward the doctor.

Due to his rage, he lost control of his strength, causing Avery to bump into the table's edge and gasp in pain.

“Stop this ruckus, Avery.”

The truth was, Cayden had little patience.

Avery's unreasonable fit in front of everyone was becoming intolerable for him.
