Fitch couldn't quite grasp why he was driven to act on impulse; perhaps it was that shimmering gaze that had sparked something

within him.

The rush of adrenaline was simply irrepressible.

Even now, his body was still abuzz with excitement.

Reaching for his pack of cigarettes, he intended to light another one, only to find the pack empty.

He'd been hitting them hard lately.

Leaning back, he undid the top two buttons of his shirt, as if needing extra air to breathe easier.

After calming himself for an hour, he finally hit the gas and drove back home.

In the dead of night, Zoey spiked a fever.

Fumbling, she managed to swallow a couple of pills; hearing Ozzy's bark, she weakly stretched a hand to the bedside, absently

petting him.

Weighed down by the heat of the fever, her mind was foggy.

Fitch's scent still lingered on the bed, as if he hadn't really left.

Burying her face in the pillow, she clung to that lingering trace of him for comfort, and her body was still radiating with feverish

warmth.

Unbeknownst to her, the photo of Fitch dropping her off had already made its way to Mia's hands.

Mia had been convinced by Sharon to stay put in the hospital room that afternoon.

The whole ordeal was her own doing; she wanted to see Zoey and her family destroyed.

As Mia looked at the photo in her grasp, her face turned ashen.

"So, my brother stayed at her place for hours?"

The man before her dared not meet her eyes and nodded slowly.

Mia was trembling with rage, clenching her fists so tightly that her palms began to bleed.

She couldn't keep this up; Fitch was already growing suspicious.

If she continued with her schemes, he'd wash his hands of her.

She needed a permanent solution.

Her lips pressed into a thin line; the thought of Zoey seducing her brother again made her blood boil.

What was Fitch thinking? How could he fall for Zoey?

No, she couldn't let Zoey destroy her life and still marry into a wealthy family.

She got out of bed and returned to the Haskins residence.

Sharon was actually pleased to see her.

"Mia, didn't | tell you to spend a few more days at the hospital?"

Mia's staged suicide had been meant to frZoey, but now that Zoey was free, the charade was pointless.

She had to think of sother tactics.

She felt like she was going mad; it seemed a wild beast within her was slamming against its cage.

"Mom, | need a favor."

Sharon, holding her hand, replied with a sigh, "I know you're hurting, but don't take it out on your brother."

Mia was seething. Fitch knew Zoey was a criminal, and yet he'd gone to her bed!

She was blind with hatred and had lost all reason.

"Mom, | just want you to pretend to be sick, to get my brother to chand look after you for a day."

Sharon eyed her skeptically, "What are you planning?"

"Mom, don't you care aboutanymore, like my brother?"

"That's not what | mean. Alright, I'll play along, but no more wild acts."

Fitch was working late at the office when he received the news that Sharon had fainted the night before.

"Mr. Haskins, the lady's condition could be due to Miss Mia's situation; the madam has hardly eaten or slept."

Fitch paused the meeting and immediately drove back to the Haskins residence.

Upon entering, he saw Mia sitting on the sofa; with a bandage wrapped around her wrist, she looked subdued. At sight of him, she

greeted with a soft, "Fitch."

Fitch nodded and headed upstairs toward Sharon's bedroom.

Sharon lay in bed, feigning unconsciousness, and a doctor was make up her prescription beside her.

"How is mom?"

"The lady is just overwhelmed with worry. She was calling out for you just now."

Fitch sat by the bed, with his back ramrod straight.

Mia entered and sat on the other side of the bed before she began to cry, "It's all my fault, mom, I'm sorry."

Sharon opened her eyes and coughed faintly, "Fitch, handyour phone. | need to call your grandfather; he's been restless over

Mia's incident."

Fitch glanced at the cracked smartphone on the nightstand; it was Sharon's phone.

He handed over his own phone to her.

Sharon coughed again, rubbing her throat as if she was uncomfortable.

Mia stood up, "Mom, letget you a glass of water."

As she spoke, she clutched her wrist as if she was in pain, and her body swayed slightly.

Fitch, leaving his jacket aside, said with a hint of impatience in his voice, "I'll get it. You two rest."

Then he stepped out of the room.

The moment he left, Sharon handed the phone to Mia with a resigned voice, "Don't take it too far."

Mia swiftly used Fitch's phone to send a text to Zoey.

Zoey, on her end, had been thinking about texting Fitch about Mia's affair, abd wondering when he would let her be.

She had even removed Fitch from her contacts’ blacklist in anticipation.

While she was typing, a message from Fitch popped up.

[About last night, | want to talk. I'm sending a driver for you.]

Zoey froze. What did he want to discuss?
