Winnie then grabbed a blanket and covered Mason with it as she lamented, “He was really excited
when he headed out. I’ve known him for so long, and yet, that was the first time I’ve seen him look so
happy. Who would’ve thought he’d end up like this…”
Josiah let out a sigh. “There simply is no telling what could happen next in life. Harold truly is pure evil!
He will pay dearly for what he did!”
“Yeah! He will!” Winnie muttered through clenched teeth.
“Should we go look for Greta now?” Josiah asked.
Xavier slowed the car down and glanced at them in the rear-view mirror as he replied, “Let’s hand
Mason over to the police.”
“Okay. But I don’t have a way to contact Greta, so we’ll have to go through Officer Clark,” Winnie said
as she sat up straight in her seat.
“All right, then. We’ll go see Officer Clark.”
With that, Xavier drove to the Special Task Force office where they met Greta the other day.
After explaining their reasons for dropping by, they received a call from James and were told to wait in
a conference room.
About twenty minutes later, Greta finally arrived.
She furrowed her brows when she entered the conference room and saw the blood on Winnie’s and
Josiah’s clothes.
“Captain Clark told me you guys ran into some trouble. What happened to you two? Why are you both
injured? How severe are your wounds?” she asked worriedly.
Realizing that Greta had gotten the wrong idea, Winnie explained, “We’re not injured, Greta. This isn’t
our blood. It’s Mason’s. Something really bad happened to him—”
“Is he still alive?” Greta demanded anxiously before Winnie could finish.
Follow on NovᴇlEnglish.nᴇt“I’m sorry. We tried our best,” Winnie replied with a solemn expression.
Greta froze even though she kind of saw it coming.
They’d be in a hospital if Mason were still alive. The fact that they’re here suggests that he’s most likely
dead…
“Where is he now?” she asked with a frown.
“We’ve handed him over to the police,” Winnie replied.
Having confirmed her suspicions, Greta rushed over to the mortuary while Winnie and the others
followed closely behind.
James, too, came rushing over as quickly as he could.
He called out to Greta the moment he saw her.
Greta paused in her tracks and said with a grim expression, “Mason is dead, Captain Clark. My
instincts are telling me that Harold had something to do with his death.”
James nodded. “Let’s continue ahead and have a look at him. We can discuss this later.”
Mason’s body had already been processed by the time they arrived at the mortuary.
It was at that moment Greta lost all courage to pull away the white cloth.
For three years, I’ve been working undercover in that horrible place disguised as a mercenary named
Greta. Throughout those three years, I spent almost every single day around Mason. I couldn’t exactly
call that love, but we did go through countless life-and-death situations together.
Greta felt extremely uncomfortable when she saw the wounds on Mason’s body.
However, she felt a lot better when she lifted the white sheet and saw his serene expression.
After stepping out of the mortuary, Greta asked James, “Captain Clark, may I have a few words with
Ms. Garland in private? It’ll only take about five minutes.”
James nodded. “Go ahead. We’ll head over to the conference room together afterward.”
“Yes, sir!”
Greta then led Winnie to an area without surveillance cameras.
Winnie handed Greta the bloodied photo and told her everything that had happened.
Greta tightened her grip on the photo and frowned deeply as she mumbled, “I may have disappointed
Mason when it came to love, but I will be sure to capture Harold myself. I can’t believe he used my
name to lure Mason out. He’s a lot more cunning than we thought. We can’t let a dangerous man like
him walk free. Harold must be stopped!”
“He’s after me this time, so you have my full cooperation,” Winnie said with a slight frown.
Although Mason wasn’t Chanaean, they still needed to investigate his death because he was murdered
in Chanaea.
When discussing his death with James, Greta requested for permission to be part of the case.
To her surprise, James turned her request down immediately. “No, you’re too impulsive. I won’t let you
get involved in this case, regardless of the reason.”
“I’m not acting impulsively, Captain Clark. I promise I won’t do anything impulsive during the
investigation either,” Greta said with a frown.
“You are being impulsive now, Margareta! You are aware that our higher-ups have another mission for
you, and yet, you’re asking to be a part of Harold’s case on such short notice? If this isn’t impulsive
behavior, I don’t know what is!”
Not wanting to reveal too much information in front of outsiders like Winnie and the others, James took
a deep breath and continued, “Go wait in my office. I’ll head over as soon as I’m done here.”
After Greta left, James reminded Winnie and the others to be extra careful at all times.
As a safety precaution, he also gave them the contact number of the person in charge of this case.
It was already eleven at night by the time Winnie and the others left the police station.
She was about to get in the driver’s seat when Xavier grabbed her hand and said, “I’ll drive. You can
get some rest in the back.”
Winnie let out a huge sigh when she recalled that the back seat was covered in Mason’s blood. “No, I
can handle it.”
Follow on Novᴇl-Onlinᴇ.cᴏmXavier nodded and made his way over to the passenger seat.
As Winnie was driving really fast, Josiah asked, “Ms. Garland, would you mind slowing down a little?”
“What’s the matter, Dr. Houghton? Are you scared?” Winnie asked with a smirk.
“Why would I be scared? I’ll have you know that I am an expert in kart racing! This is nothing!” Josiah
protested.
Winnie gazed at him through the rear-view mirror and let out a chuckle. “Heh… Putting on a tough
front, I see.”
She then turned the steering wheel really aggressively all of a sudden, causing Josiah to fall to the
side.
Not wanting to slam his head into the car window a second time, Josiah had no choice but to give up.
“Okay, I’m sorry! I’m sorry!”
Xavier placed a hand on Winnie’s lap and said, “Pull over by the gas station in front.”
Winnie simply shot him a glance before doing as told.
Xavier then went inside to buy some beer before making his way back to the car and tapping on the
driver’s window.
Winnie rolled the window down and asked, “What is it?”
“Let’s switch places. I’ll take you somewhere,” Xavier replied.
“For a drink?” Winnie asked with an eyebrow arched when she saw what he had in his hand.
“Yeah. It’ll help you relax.”
After exchanging places with her, Xavier drove them to the beach and parked the car.
Josiah recognized the place instantly. “Hey, Xavier! Isn’t this your super-secret hideout? I thought you
said you were going to keep this place for yourself after buying it?”
“You two are an exception.” Xavier leaned over to unbuckle Winnie’s seat belt and gave her a quick
peck on the cheek. “All right, we’re here.”
