Chapter 816

Avery's gaze darkened upon hearing the words. "Let him wait in another private room while | take care of the

guests here," he said, then slipped away to the adjacent suite.

As soon as he entered, Warner, who was downing a drink to steady his nerves, jumped up as if on springs,

rushing towards Avery with bloodshot eyes.

"What the hell happened? How could somebody die?"

"Mr. Bright, I'm not sure what you're talking about," Avery replied, a composed smile playing on his lips.

Warner's face was a mask of panic. Even though they were alone, he lowered his voice to a whisper. "The stuff

you sold me, is there something wrong with it? I've only pushed it twice, and now someone's overdosed?"

Avery kept smiling as if it was no big deal. "Drugs are drugs. They're poison. Isn't it normal for people to die from

them?"

"But I've never seen anyone go crazy and die after just two hits!"

"Well, now you have," Avery retorted calmly.

Warner's face turned ashen as he grabbed Avery by the collar. "Avery! Don't play games with me! If | get into

trouble, do you think you can escape unscathed? We're in the sboat! If | go down, I'm taking you with me!"

"Look at you, all worked up over a little mishap, thinking about death. That's bad luck right there," Avery chided,

his eyes narrowing with suppressed laughter as he pushed Warner away. His pale hand rose slowly, smoothing

out the wrinkles on his shirt. "It's a new drug, only recently hit the overseas market. It's not unusual for first-time

users to have a bad reaction."

"What do we do now? Today, | heard that someone on this stuff went berserk in the middle of the street and just

dropped dead! It was horrific, like a seizure!"

Warner was visibly shaken. "The cops will autopsy him. If they trace the drugs back to the Bright Group, what

then?"

"Didn't | tell you to push the product to underground groups in ElImsworth and beyond?"

Avery sat back on the couch, pouring himself a glass of whiskey, his voice steady. "The dead guy was from the S-

Star Group, a notorious gangster. Who knows what else he was on before your product. The cops won't care

much about his death."

"But how can you be so sure?" Warner persisted, still skeptical.

Avery scoffed, shaking his head in disdain. Zachary had built a drug empire, but his eldest son was just an

overgrown kid without a clue.

"First off, it was an accidental overdose, not murder. Secondly, this drug does have a side effect that can trigger

underlying conditions in people who don't even realize they're sick. Maybe the guy had epilepsy and didn't know

it," Avery said, sipping his whiskey, half-truths rolling off his tongue.

Warner's tense expression softened slightly.

"Just relax. The product's fine. They're the problem, not us."

After stime, Avery let Warner have a few more drinks before having Harvey escort him home.

Shortly afterward, Harvey returned with a grim look. "Mr. Chambers, this isn't looking good. If something goes

wrong and the cops pick up Warner, and he rats you out."

"Don't worry, it won't be that easy. And | won't give Warner the chance to implicate me."

Despite his reassurance, Avery's smile faded, his gaze becoming shadowed. "But one thing's for sure, the second

trial has failed."

Harvey sighed. "Yes, I've compiled the data report and sent it to Ms. Alexia. She'll forward it to the research

institute back home."

Avery clenched his teeth in frustration. His mother's Alzheimer's was beyond critical, and he was desperate for

this new drug to save her.

"Deal with the police by getting in touch with Director-General Wayne. Assign someone reliable to handle this."

"Understood."

Just then, his phone vibrated. Seeing the caller, Avery straightened up and answered with a deep breath.

sir

"Another failure?" Chad's voice was light but carried an oppressive weight. Avery knew it wasn't his fault; he

wasn't in R&D, but his heart still squeezed tight. "Yes."

"Never mind, we have a long way to go," Chad seemed to console himself, his tone softening. "But your

approach is good. | didn't expect you'd involve the Bright family so quickly. Ave, | didn't misjudge you.

Supporting you back then was the right choice."

Avery's heart swelled with a cherished memory. A young Evadne stood on a steep hillside, her sparkling eyes as

bright as stars in the warm sunshine, offering him her hand. "Don't be afraid! I'll pull you up!"

Young Ave was scared, but with her by his side, he forgot his fear and yearned to be near her. They climbed to

the top together, hand in hand, thanks to Evadne's encouragement, witnessing a breathtaking view of wild roses

sprawling across the

hills.

But he only loved the one beside him.

Avery blinked away the sting of memories, like a sharp needle bursting a beautiful bubble. There were no roses,

no Evadne—just a world woven with blood and desire, an endless abyss of darkness into which he kept falling.

"Thanks to your trust and support, sir, I've made it this far. Without you, my mother and | would never have had

the chance to return to EImsworth, to the Chambers Group."

"Just watch your back, though. The Brights aren't exactly small fry. Their young scion, he's thick as thieves with

Cassius and gets along famously with the whole Ashbourne family."

Chad's tone was casual, betraying no emotion. "Make one wrong move and you might just find yourself bitten

back. That would be quite the loss, wouldn't it?"

"You're right, I'm on it," Avery quickly agreed, sensing the gravity beneath Chad's seeming nonchalance.

"The Brights cfrom a long line of scholars, and Bright Biopharma is valued in the billions. How did they end

up in this mess?"

Chad's voice was as seductive as a siren's call, "They've been developing a new drug recently. Go dig around,

see if there's been a hiccup. It might just turn into a powerful card in your hand."

Avery's expression grew dark and thoughtful. "Understood."
