Chapter 311 It was him.

Chris.

The man paused mid-motion. "You know me?" Sylvia quickly looked away, shaking her head. Her voice trembled as she pleaded, "I swear, I don't know anything. Why won't Ms. Lance believe me?" She couldn't admit it-there might still be a slim chance to get out of this.

The man let out a cocky laugh. "Then you make sure to haunt her, you hear?" He raised the metal pipe and swung it down.

Sylvia instinctively curled up, bracing herself. But almost at the sinstant, the man was flung across the room like a ragdoll, crashing into a row of lockers.

The lockers toppled in a domino effect, smashing through the plywood covering the window. Moonlight spilled through the jagged gap, stretching the shadow of the man now standing before her. Blood dripped from his bruised knuckles, staining the ruby ring on his finger an even deeper red.

It was Rupert.

When she recognized him, Sylvia bit down on her colorless lips and slid down the wall, her legs giving out.

Before she hit the ground, strong arms swept her up.

The helmeted man, seeing this, scrambled through the broken window and fled into the night.

Rupert carried Sylvia out of the pool house. Orson approached, his expression grim.

"Fanny's gone. All the security footage in the area's been wiped-someone must've tipped them off." Only the Lance family could pull off something like this so fast.

Rupert looked down at the pale woman in his arms. Dressed head-to-toe in black, he nearly vanished into the darkness. His chiseled features were cold, his eyes glinting with dangerous intent.

"Is everything ready?" "But, Rupert-Tristan..." Orson met Rupert's gaze. Whatever he saw there made him swallow and nod, falling silent.

Hospital.

When Sylvia woke up, everything was still hazy, but she could feel that her body had been cleaned up, probably by a nurse.

For the first time, she found the sterile scent of antiseptic oddly comforting.

"She's awake-she's awake!" The voice jolted Sylvia. Her heart thudded and her blood ran cold for a second before she bolted upright in bed.

The IV needle tore free from her arm, leaving a trail of blood behind.

"Whoa! Are you crazy? Lie back down! Molly, get in here and re-do her IV!" A doctor in a white coat rushed over, pinning Sylvia's arms gently while calling for the nurse.

"Letgo! Get away from me! Back off!" Sylvia's voice was raw and desperate. She thrashed, and when she couldn't get free, she kicked out hard, landing a solid blow to the doctor's stomach.

"Jeez-ouch! You could've warned me!" Chris doubled over, wincing. A little higher and it would've been a disaster.

Still, he didn't let go of her bleeding arm, worried she'd hurt herself again.

Rupert strode forward and all but yanked Chris aside, catching Sylvia's injured hand and pulling her into his arms.

"Sylvia, it's me. Stop, okay? Don't move... You'll..." You'll get hurt.

But he didn't finish. He just held her close, his tong lashes shadowing his eyes, hiding the storm of emotion there He looked calm, but his grip on her waist tightened with every passing second. Hearing his voice, Sylvia couldn't pretend she didn't feel safer. Even if she didn't want to admit it, when she'd been at her most terrified, hearing Rupert's voice meant rescue.

A mess of feelings tangled up inside her. She let herself go limp, resting quietly in Rupert's embrace.

The nurse rushed in, startled at the sight of Sylvia's arm, the IV needle sticking right through her skin.

Pulling out the needle stung, making Sylvia wince and her breathing turn shallow.

The nurse's voice was gentle. "You swallowed sdirty water. We're worried about an infection in your lungs. Once this next round of meds is done, your breathing should get easier, okay? Don't worry." Sylvia wanted to relax, but the sight of another needle made her tense up anyway.

Just then, a pair of hands gently covered her eyes.

Sylvia froze, surprised for a moment.
