Chapter 77 Feeling Inferior with One Look

Sophia smiled at Josephine. It was only a polite greeting without saying anything. She washed

her hands and left.

Josephine looked at her gorgeous figure before looking at her wretched self in the mirror. The disparity

was huge. It turned out, some people could make one feel inferior with one look. She guessed that

most people would prefer a woman like Sophia.

Josephine looked at her messy hair and smiled listlessly. How could someone like such a terrible

person like her?

She tidied her hair and walked out of the washroom. When she returned to her desk, Sophia was next

to Hilary, discussing something on Hilary’s computer.

Hilary swept a glance at Josephine and said softly, “Miss King, do you know who hired that mute?”

Sophia paused for a while before saying, “Just do your work. Don’t gossip so much.”

Hilary pouted and continued working, editing her work on the computer.

Sophia instinctively turned to look at Josephine with an inexplicable gaze in her eyes. Then, she got up

and headed back to her office. Ever since Sophia returned from her business trip, Hilary no longer

dared to lord over Josephine, which was why Josephine had nothing much to do for the next few days.

Although Conrad gave her some stuff to do, he had already done it beforehand. She was. extremely

free every day.

Something also happened to Mr. Hall. When Josephine got off work on Friday, she suddenly heard

them discussing how Mr. Hall was being audited, and there were problems with his accounts, so much

so that he might even have to go to prison.

Everyone cast pitiful glances at Josephine when they said that. That was because everyone was under

the impression that she was having an affair with Mr. Hall. Once he was in trouble, no one else could

protect her anymore.

Josephine pretended that she didn’t notice their gaze. She quietly stood by the corner of the elevator,

and once it had reached her floor, she walked out directly.

That night, Lewis didn’t return. Sam had sent her a message to tell her where to meet the next day.

Josephine held her phone and slept on the sofa. The next morning, she headed to the café where they

agreed to meet.

Josephine saw a man sitting at the table where they had agreed upon. He was in a suit, dressed up

impeccably. He appeared to be in his thirties and looked just like how he sounded- righteous and

tough.

Josephine walked over and sat in front of Sam. He knew she couldn’t speak, so he nodded and said,

“Miss Vance, right?”

Josephine nodded.

He continued, “We’ve discussed rather in detail about the situation already. Why don’t we head to the

elderly’s place to have a look?”

Josephine was a little stunned. She didn’t know where Patrick’s house was.

Sam could guess it from her reaction. He asked, “You don’t know where she lives?”

Josephine nodded embarrassingly. She had wasted Sam’s effort in meeting up with him.

He furrowed his brow. “Well, this makes it a little more challenging. Give me a minute. Let me ask and

see.”

Sam took his phone out and made a call. “Can you help me check out the details on this person? I’ll

send you the info soon. Thanks.” He ended the call and asked Josephine, “You only know he is called

Patrick Leigh, right? Do you have any other information?”

Josephine typed on her phone. “Mrs. Jinkins’ full name is Mary Jinkins. Patrick Leigh has a son that is

getting married soon.”

Sam nodded. “Okay, got it.”

While waiting for news from the other side, Sam picked up the menu and asked Josephine, What would

you like to drink?”

Josephine scratched her head. She had never drunk coffee. Furthermore, she was on drips at that

moment. She could not have coffee, so she asked for a glass of water.

Sam looked at her for a while before suddenly asking, “By the way, Miss Vance, maybe this is a little

too forthcoming, but were you born mute or…’

Josephine bit her lips and shook her head, stating that she didn’t know. Old Mr. Alvarez had taken her

to the hospital for a check-up once, but the doctors could not find any problems. They said that her

vocal cords were intact.

Later, she was transferred to many other hospitals, and the results all came back the same. She had

no problems, but she could not speak.

Whether she had been traumatized when she was young, she said she couldn’t remember, so some

doctors speculated that she was born mute.

Sam looked at the text on her phone and nodded. “If you were born mute, usually you would be able to

detect the problem. I still think it happened later on.”

Josephine blinked. She did not know if she was born mute, but if she was not, did that mean there was

a cure? Also, it might not affect her descendants.

At the thought of her descendants, the light in Josephine’s eyes dimmed.

They casually chatted for a while when Sam received the information. He looked at his phone. and

smiled. “We got it,” he said. “Let’s go.”

Josephine nodded. She collected her thoughts and followed Sam out of the café.

Sam drove to where Patrick lived. It was a high-end neighborhood. The price of the houses there was

not cheap. It started from at least 50 thousand dollars.

Patrick was lazy. So, the only reason he could live there must be because he had taken a lot of money

from Mrs. Jinkins. After all, when she was working with the Alvarez family, she had quite a handsome

salary.

Sam did not head directly to Patrick’s house. He first went over to his neighbors to collect evidence.

There was no one next door, but someone was at home across from Patrick’s place. It was a lady with

a child.

When that lady saw the two of them, she was a little cautious. Sam handed his business card to the

lady, saying, “Hello, I’m a lawyer, and I’d like to ask you some questions.”

When the lady accepted his name card, she was even more cautious. “I don’t think I’ve done. anything

wrong, right?”

“No, no. We’re here to ask you about the family living across from you.”

Only then did the lady relax a little. She opened the door and let Josephine and Sam inside. Josephine

was a little nervous since she had never taken things to court before. It might seem simple on paper,

but it was a challenge trying to execute it.

Sam asked the lady a few questions, and once he had gotten her approval, he took out his recording

pen and recorded whatever the lady knew about Patrick’s family.

“Back then, they were quite a happy family. The mother was kind, and the son was obedient, but that

was a few years back. Patrick said that his mother had returned to her hometown to retire, but we have

never seen her return.”

A few years ago, meaning that was when Old Mr. Alvarez passed away? The Alvarez family had cut off

Mrs. Jinkins’ stream of income, and Patrick could no longer get any money from her, so he kicked her

out.

“Is there anything else?”

The lady thought for a while before saying, “I’m not quite sure. This is all I know, but a few days ago,

they brought the old woman back, right? I heard arguments coming from their house, but I can’t hear

very clearly, so I don’t know whether they were arguing with the old

woman.”

Sam quietly listened to the lady speak. When she finished, he nodded and stood up. He took his

recorder, thanking her. “Thank you for your time.”

Then, he left with Josephine, about to head to the other houses to interview them. They had asked

almost all the neighbors that were home. Other than refusing to be recorded, all of them had more or

less the same testimony.

Patrick was indeed mistreating his mother. Someone noticed him swearing at his mother when he left

the house a few days ago. Something about cursing her to death.

Josephine could not imagine that there would be such cruel and selfish children on this earth. She was

even more determined to help Mrs. Jinkins with her problem.

As she was thinking about it, the door to Patrick’s house opened. He came out and saw Josephine and

Sam and was instantly delighted. He walked over to Sam, mistaking him for Lewis.

“You must be Mr. Alvarez! Who would have thought that you would come here!”
