"Go ahead and eat; | gotta go."
Kent was still hung up on what Sophia had mentioned to him. After saying goodbye to Brandon and Sophia, he grabbed his tray
and bolted.
As returning his tray, Kent bumped into Marian, who had also just finished eating.
"Kent," Marian greeted him warmly.
"Ms. Barlow."
Kent replied politely, not really knowing her well - just enough for casual hellos.
Marian was in the sboat, barely knowing Kent, other than him being one of Brandon's crew. A simple nod was all their
acquaintance merited.
After exchanging greetings, she turned and walked away.
Kent followed suit, stepping out while fishing out his phone to make a call, "Hey, Noah, it's me, Kent. Got a sec? I'm trying to find
out if there's a homeless guy named Nell who was taken to your shelter. Oh? There isn’t? Someone named Jerry or Tomas might've
dropped him off."
Marian paused in her tracks, looking a bit puzzled.
Kent, completely focused on the phone, said, "Alright, alright, I'll double-check, see if he was taken to another police station."
Follow on NovᴇlEnglish.nᴇtAfter hanging up, Kent furrowed his brows in confusion.
Back in the staff canteen, Brandon and Sophia were still chowing down.
"What were you and Kent chatting about? You seemed pretty chuffed," Brandon asked casually.
"Oh, nothing major, just asked him for a little favor," Sophia replied.
Brandon nodded, fell silent for a bit, and then looked up at her, "You know, you can always ctofor anything, too."
Sophia looked up, and nodded slightly, "Okay."
Brandon's lips twitched into a strained smile; Sophia mustered a smile back. They ended their meal in a rather peaceful
atmosphere.
After lunch, Sophia and Brandon headed back to their offices respectively.
Just as Sophia got to her office door, she ran into Marian who was on her way back from getting water.
"Director Yearwood."
Marian greeted Sophia with eyes downcast, a picture of humbleness.
Ever since the last plagiarism scandal, when facing Sophia, Marian seemingly changed to another person, a stark contrast to her
former self-assured demeanor, now seeming timid, but this timidity was reserved solely for Sophia.
It seemed she didn't even have the guts to look Sophia in the eye anymore. Every tshe bumped into Sophia, she acted as a
person who was all reverent and respectful to Sophia, and wouldn't stay with her alone any longer.
Everyone in the office had caught wind of that press conference and heard of what Marian did. While they maintained professional
cordiality on the surface and wouldn't embarrass her in public, behind closed doors the gossip mills churned. No surprise there;
getting caught red-handed in plagiarism by the victim herself would naturally make anyone sheepish.
Sophia had been swamped lately, plus a week's business trip, and hadn't really noticed Marian's recently newfound shyness until
now.
She gave Marian a curious glance but simply nodded, "Hey."
Just then, the glass door swung open automatically. Someone walked in with a familiar male voice, "Is Mr. Dempsey around?"
Sophia glanced up instinctively, locking eyes with him; it was Martin.
Marian looked up too, and seeing Martin's gaze drift towards Sophia, she tensed, "Martin? What brings you here?" She quickly
cozied up to Martin, skillfully blocking his view of Sophia.
Martin's attention was reluctantly pulled back to Marian. He withdrew his arm.
"I'm here to see Don," he said, his voice much cooler than before.
Ever since the last incident, the feelings Martin had towards Marian was complicated, especially when she deliberately linked her
arms with his in the office like they were super close.
"Mr. Dempsey's out for lunch with a client, should be back soon. I'll take you to the meeting room to wait," Marian said, ignoring
Martin's discomfort and dragging him towards the conference room outside.
Follow on Novᴇl-Onlinᴇ.cᴏmMartin glanced at her but didn't resist.
Marian kept a grip on Martin until they were alone, and then she allowed herself to breathe a sigh of relief, though her heart still
raced, feeling somewhat ungrounded.
Since she confirmed Sophia was Yolanda, not only could she not face Sophia directly, but she also panicked at the mere sight of
any Frost family member interacting with Sophia.
It hadn't been long, but Marian felt like she was on the verge of a breakdown. With so much future ahead, she had no clue how to
handle this constant fear.
