Chapter 47.1. Saved Children

-???’s POV-

The sound of tong-tong kanten and tong-kachi echoes through the orphanage.

As the construction workers held up their disposable wands of magical tools, the hole in the wall rippled, and mysteriously, the hole was closed, and the dirt on the wall disappeared.

Many construction workers visited the orphanage, and the now battered orphanage was being restored. Seeing the walls getting cleaner and cleaner, the orphans were amazed at the magic they were seeing for the first time, their mouths open, and eyes sparkling with excitement.

“Wow, that’s amazing. People said it was magic.”

“In no time at all, the wall is getting fixed.”

The children who had been in the orphanage before were delighted to see the cracks were gone and impressed by the magic power. A naughty boy shouted happily to everyone as he saw more and more futons being brought into the room.

“That’s a fluffy futon!”

“The pillows are fluffy too!”

“Look, the sheets are also white. Not yellowed.”

Everyone shouted with delight at the sight of the new futon. It was the first time they had ever seen a new futon. And since it looked like they had one of their own, it was only natural that they were thrilled.

“It’s so smooth!”

Some of the children are already diving into the futon. After seeing the pleasant expressions on their friend’s faces, everyone was about to dive in, including me. But with a clap of hands, the girl leading the orphanage stopped them.

“No! Your dirty body will blacken the bedding. Look, they said you can take a bath today at noon. Let’s clean up and make the futon won’t get dirty, okay?”

“Ye~s.”

Everyone obediently followed the instructions of the older girl who seemed to be the orphanage leader and headed for the bathhouse. The bathhouse is quite spacious, as it is a former dormitory. The cost of the waterway is high, so we used to be able to go in only once every three days, but recently we have been able to go in every day.

The construction workers are fixing up the battered orphanage, the carriers are bringing in futons, the electricians are installing air conditioners, and a TV is being set up in the dining room.

Amidst the considerable commotion, the orphans make their way to the bathhouse.

“It looks like there were a lot of donations from last week’s charity event.”

A fellow girl calls out to the leader girl as she enters the bathhouse and undresses in the changing room. Her voice is happy.

“Yeah, I guess so. I heard there was a lot. No, it sounds like there was more than a lot.”

The leader girl replies as she helps the new little girl who came in the other day undress.

“What do you mean it was a lot?”

“You know, it’s just a word. The director was pale. He said, ‘what am I going to do with such a large amount of money’?”

“Heeh. That’s why there’s one more dish of rice.”

She opened the sliding door and entered the bathhouse, murmuring comfortably that her fellow girls were full. Everyone else comes into the bathhouse in droves. The little girl runs a little and tries to get in, so I hold her in my arms with a wry smile and clean the dirt off her body with the hot water before getting into the bathtub.

“Ofuro, shuki~.”

“Yes, yes. I’ll wash your body first.”

I hold down the little girl who is out of control and wants to get into the bath as soon as possible and pour hot water on her. This little girl has loved baths ever since she came here and took a bath.

They fixed the bathhouse first. The floor tiles and cracked walls are clean. All the tiles had been replaced, even though some were missing, and the walls had been repaired and repainted.

“Well, I saw it in the Director’s office.”

“What?”

I got into the bathtub, and my body warmed up. I exhaled and stretched my legs out comfortably. I hold the little girl in my arms as she tries to swim and tell her what I saw the other day.

“There’s someone in his suit. They asked the director to leave the money management to him. The director bowed his head and thanked him.”

“Yeah, isn’t that a scam?”

A fellow girl crowded in, making the hot water ripple. If that’s all it’s true, she’ll sound like a fraudster, and the leader girl will smile wryly and push back her companion’s face when she’s approaching her.

“It’s the guy from Charity. He’s the noble butler. Te, te, he said Teikyo-ke or something like that. I think that’s his identity.”

I scoop up some hot water, splash it on my face and wipe it off. It feels good, I think, and I brush my wet hair out of my face.

“Heh. A nobility, huh? What a strange feeling. We’ve never had a noble come to our house before, have we?”

“That’s right. I wonder why.”

The leader girl agrees. Why in the world would we be the target of a charity event? I hate to say it, but we’re smaller than most orphanages, and don’t stand out in any way.

Not even on my body. I touch my chest and stare at my fellow girl. They are getting the same nutrition, but there is a difference. Is this the power of genes?

It has been 6 years since the monsters killed my parents. The leader of the group will be 12 years old next month. If I awakened to mana, I would have had no trouble with work, but being a genuine commoner, I never awaken it. For a time, I did the practices that ordinary children do, such as concentrating and meditating, but to no avail.

Then, I thought of improving my good looks, hoping to win a ball, but I didn’t have one. I lacked nutrition. It was not just her breasts. My body was too skinny, and I had no fat. It was a problem before beauty. All of my fellow orphans were similar.

Yes. The most conspicuous thing is that a director is a good person, and the number of orphans has increased rapidly recently. Nearly 20 children who said they lived in the slums came. The orphanage suddenly fell into poverty.

The good director was in trouble, but he was trying to make ends meet, and we decided to help. The children who came to the orphanage were skinny. We all tried our best to help them, even if it meant eating less.

However, money was a difficult thing to deal with, and we watched the director’s face grow darker and darker with pain. Then we heard about a charity project.

We sang a song and asked for donations. We didn’t expect much, but we did our best to help the director, even if only a little.
