Chapter 944
“Guess so.” Tanisha threw a glance over her shoulder, unsure whether leaving Clair in Cornelia’s room was good.
“Why don’t you take a break?” Zack suggested, his eyes scanning the room. The house was bustling with two card
games in progress and the kitchen busy, but there was no sign of Cornelia. “Where’s Nelly?” He asked.
“Nelly’s caught up in something.” Tanisha thought it best to keep things under wraps, hence didn’t disclose the
whole truth to Zack, “Just carry on with your stuff, I’ll go check on her”
Still feeling uneasy, Tanisha returned to the door to stand guard, just in case anything went south.

Clair attempted to reach out for Cornelia’s hand but was met with avoidance before she could even touch her.
Tears welled up in Clair’s eyes and some dropped, “Cornelia, can you spare a few minutes for me to say
something?”
Despite Clair’s tears, Cornelia remained unmoved, “Go ahead.”
Given the chance to speak, Clair was confident she could sway Cornelia
Clair sobbed. “Cornelia, as soon as I heard about your grandma’s passing, I rushed back to bid her farewell. I
intended to recognize you and take you to Riverton with me. I admit I made some mistakes before, not knowing you
were my daughter. If I had known, I wouldn’t have hurt you even if a gun was pointed at my head.
“You might blame me for leaving you and your father. Truth is, I didn’t want to. I had severe postpartum depression
back then. You know how serious depression can be. There were times I thought of ending both our lives, but
thankfully, I didn’t.
“I could control myself once or twice, but not every time. I was afraid I’d lose control and do something stupid, so I
asked your father for divorce and left Rosenberg alone. I planned to end my life somewhere quiet, not to bother
you or your father. But then I met a kind soul who helped me overcome depression. After I got better, I went back
to Rosenberg. I wanted to come home. But I saw your father ready to start a new life with another woman.! didn’t
want to disrupt your lives, so I left quietly, vowing never to return. Your grandma must have told you that my
parents died early and I had no siblings Your father was my only support. After leaving him, I had to find a job, make

Clair let out a lot. But Cornelia was still stone–faced, “Are you done?”
Clair said, “Nelly, I had my reasons for leaving you and your dad. Can you believe me?”
Cornelia said, “If you’re done, then please leave! Stay as far away from me as possible! Don’t ever show up in front
of me again, and never tell anyone that you’re my mom. I won’t acknowledge it.”
Clair said, “Nelly, you’re my flesh and blood. No matter how you deny our relationship, you can’t change the fact
that my blood is running in your veins.”
“So what? Just because I have your blood in my veins, I should acknowledge you as my mom and forgive all your
wrongdoings?” Cornelia sneered, “I might be too kind–hearted sometimes, unable to bear seeing others suffer. But
for someone like you, I don’t have a shred of sympathy.”
