Chapter 285 How could Irene possibly be here? Hadn't Brian already shipped her off overseas? Panic surged through Nathan. He'd been planning everything so carefully: once the whole family was abroad, he would buy a gun, wait for the right moment, and eliminate Irene-tie up every loose end for good.
But now, before he could even set foot on a plane, Irene was standing right in front of him, very much alive.
That bastard Brian had sworn up and down that Irene was being kept under strict house arrest at the estate, that there was no possible way for her to escape.
Nathan's gaze flickered nervously. But when his eyes landed on Jarrod and Karin Cole, realization struck like a bolt of lightning. Of course it had to be the Cole couple who smuggled Irene back.
Right now, both Jarrod and Karin were glaring at him with naked hostility, their eyes burning with unspoken accusations.

A cold sweat broke out across his forehead. He didn't dare meet the Coles' eyes and quickly looked away, feigning indifference.
But when his gaze drifted to Aberdeen and Grace, the room seemed to tilt around him, leaving him reeling. What were these two old women doing here? He remembered perfectly well-on the day Irene woke up, those two had hovered around Claire, doing everything they could to help her. At the time, he'd assumed they were just ordinary old ladies. Now, it was clear things were far more complicated.
The one standing by the wall, dressed in a uniform identical to May's, was obviously a housekeeper. But the elegant woman seated on the sofa, draped in pearls and fine silk, could only be Sean's grandmother-Aberdeen.
As the realization dawned, Nathan felt as if a sledgehammer had slammed into his skull.
He'd managed to offend Aberdeen herself, and hadn't even known it.
God help him if the old woman remembered. With her against him, how would he ever get Vanessa out? Finally, Nathan's eyes landed on Claire and Sean, and a cold sweat soaked his back.
Claire-the little wretch-was here too, sitting right next to Sean as if she belonged there.
How had things cto this? Could it be that when he'd first tried to marry Claire off to Sean, she'd already managed to seduce him? Yes, that had to be it.
He'd always known Claire was nothing but a gold-digger, a shameless social climber at heart.
Nathan's thoughts raced. His expression stiffened for a split second, but he quickly pasted on his usual shameless smile, pretending nothing at all was amiss.
He forced a laugh and turned to Claire. "Why, Claire, you're here too! You've been away from hfor so long- why didn't you ever call? You had your poor old dad worried sick!" Useless little stray, he thought with contempt. He'd never had any patience for Claire, but he knew she was always desperate for affection. Maybe he could use that—play the loving father, tug at her heartstrings, and get her to help persuade Sean to release Vanessa.
Follow on Novᴇl-Onlinᴇ.cᴏmWith that in mind, he mustered up his most ingratiating smile for Claire.
But all he got in return was a look of pure hatred.
If, when she'd first seen the evidence Jeffry had dug up, Claire had wanted nothing more than to tear Natham limb from limb, now-after learning the truth about the past from Irene-she didn't even want him dead. She wanted him to suffer, to live a life worse than death. It was time, she decided, for him to finally face the whole truth.
She could hardly wait to see his face when he realized that the beloved O daughter he'd lavished so much attention on wasn't even his, that all on his scheming and manipulation had only benefited someone else. Claire's lips curled in a mocking half-smile. "You? Worried about me?" "Of course! I'm your father, aren't I?" Nathan insisted shamelessly.
The word "father" had barely left his lips before everyone in the room scoffed in disgust.
Jarrod shot Nathan a look as if he were something he'd just scraped off his shoe. "You planned a c-section to harvest your own daughter's organs for your bastard -how dare you call yourself a father?" Karin's voice was icy. "You carved out your own child's heart, her liver, stripped her for parts. You think you're worthy of the title 'father'?" May sneered, "Donated your daughter's body to science just to make a nfor yourself-what kind of father does that?"
